Quick update: I just got back from driving around, by myself, on a beautiful Fall day -- my first time driving since surgery in September. And it was GLORIOUS!

I'd been cleared to drive for a while, but as a practical matter I've still needed to be chauffeured since I have to haul my scooter-thingy around. I could get off of it into the driver's seat, but I couldn't then put it into the car so I'd have it at my destination.

So today, just to experience some freedom, I got into the car and just left my scooter in the garage and went for a drive on my own. Wonderful!

Better yet, though -- I do some of my best thinking in my car by myself -- I got to wondering if I might be able to shuffle around while holding onto the car enough to put the scooter away and then get myself back to the driver's seat. When I got back home, I tried it out, and I can! Which means that I am now able to drive myself! YAY!

My wife is both thrilled and worried... Thrilled that she doesn't have to drive me everywhere any more, and worried now that she won't always know where I am like she has the past seven weeks! :D:

My latest progress report: I'm walking again! Today my surgeon cleared me to start walking, for the first time in ten weeks. Granted, I'm on crutches, can only put so much weight down, I move slowly, and I get sore and cranky pretty quickly, but I am walking. The process may be slow but at least there is measurable improvement. :crutch:

As I've written before, my right ankle now contains a collection of metal plates, pins, and screws to hold the new bone arrangement in place. Well, today's doctor visit also brought a mild surprise -- one of the screws on the right-hand side did not hold to the bone as well as planned. It doesn't seem like it will be a problem or affect me for the worse, though. That's the good news.

The bad news is this: my family now proudly trumpets that they have medical confirmation that I have a screw loose.

Sigh. At least so far I've been able to keep them from saying "another screw loose."
