Hey, they were comic relief, but they are so much closer to what real pirates are like. Dirty, sometimes not too bright, but always ready for action, not looking like a dandy.

I dont know... I mean it was reported that Johnny Depp is a metod actor... in other words.. it was reported that he did not take a bath or wash his hair while preping for the role or in the filming so he could feel like a real pirate.

There's a legendary story (which may be apocryphal -- Hoffman denies it) from when Method actor Hoffman was filming Marathon Man with Sir Laurence Olivier. Just before a scene where Hoffman's character was supposed to be out of breath, Hoffman went for a long-distance run -- so he would be out of breath.

Olivier is reputed to have told him, "My dear boy, why not try acting? It's much easier." :D:
