If memory serves, Thanksgiving was held on various dates, and not every year, until Abraham Lincoln signed into law the declaration that Thanksgiving become a national holiday, on the third Thursday of November. I could be wrong, but I think it was President Eisenhower who signed an amendment to it, making it the fourth Thursday in November. I understand that the retail establishment was responsible for the change, as it gave them a better angle on getting people to shop for Christmas.
