Stupid Friend Tricks

Last night I asked my friend and former coworker if my son with autism could get a ride back from church to the local mall from her. She said, no ,she had to work, but a relative would be able to drive him. I thanked her.
Today, I call my son to say we are getting him from the mall, and he says his back REALLY hurts from an accident they were in! We are only a few minutes away, so he tells me some details, he seems not greatly hurt, I give him some ibuprofen that helps somewhat when we get him, and we go to eat at a lunch we had planned.
I call the girl who was driving, and she says she was rear-ended from behind. I asked if she got the other driver's info (my son said she had) and she says no, it was a hit and run.....
Nothing she is saying seems to make good sense to me, so I asked her if she made a police report....No, because her car was fine....errr...my son needs medical care, it was a hit and run, could she make a report? She says she needs to call her mom about it and will call me back.
I call her back and in that hour she says she called the police,they came right out to her home and REFUSED to make a report. This sounds like a bunch of SH** to me, I already surmised that she probably didn't have car insurance, but hey, I'll ask, because my medical clinic may need the info. She refuses to give me a policy number.
Enter my "friend", who calls me and states that I am "over the top" for asking this,how dare I ask this poor 19 year old who has suffered so much in her personal life for her insurance, I couldn't prove my son had back pain because of this accident, yadayada. This from someone who got a healthy settlement from a local MD for a mistake in care and whose other daughter was run over by some drunk and also seriously injured but is thankfully mostly recovered . Yes, somehow, I am being unreasonable.
Glad my son seems to not be seriously injured, but Jeez, it takes something minor like this to bring out some people's true colors.

Why would the cops come out to the house and refuse to make a report? Sounds suspicious to me. If your son says they gave a report perhaps you could check with the police, or even run an ad asking witnesses to come forward. You could also tell your friend that your son was hurt, since he was complaining of lots of pain in his back, and you need the info for your doctor. What if it was her daughter that was a passenger in an accident? Wouldn't she want access to information?
Also, if the hit and run--if it was that-- was severe enough to make your son's back hurt so much, I seriously doubt the other car that rear-ended her would've been able to take off--too much front-end damage. And she would have comparable rearend damage. Would it be possible to drive by her place, assuming you know where she lives, and if the daughter's car is outside, drive by and just look to see whether the back end is damaged? I agree, this story of hers stinks to high heaven. Suffered so much in her life for her insurance? Oh, puh-leeze! What does that have to do with it? What, she had problems getting insurance? She's 19, she's probably still on her mother's insurance. Good luck getting the info you need.

Well, as you noticed, the Driver's story set off my BS detector.....I did go by the house, the car doesn't have visible damage (viewed from the street), I think my son probably just got a good jolt.
You are right, if the situation were reversed, my "friend" would want all the details, including insurance info, and I WOULD GIVE THEM TO HER. :mad:

OK, This Gets Even Better......
She sent an email to various groups that her daughter and my son go to telling them "it was a non-event" and DO NOT TALK TO HER DAUGHTER AND MY SON ABOUT IT as "They will blow it out of proportion"

Why would her daughter blow it out of proportion? Wouldn't she tell her daughter exactly what happened, so as to get the story "right"?

She just doesn't want anyone to know the truth about what happened, so she is basically planting the idea that anything her daughter and my son say about the incident "is blown out of proportion" and "the whole thing was a non-event". Pretty cavalier of her, as only my son got hurt, guess he doesn't matter. She never checked to see how he felt or what the Doctor's exam showed, just told everyone in the email he "claimed" he had pain. :mad:

Being the suspicious person that I am, I am almost willing to bet that the daughter either had no insurance or no license.

If it cost you one penny from your health insurance, you can tell them to "bill" the party that caused the injury. I know that my health insurance sends me a form if we get medical attention that could be a work related and/or accident involving another party!

Also, you COULD (should) file a report with the police stating that your son was in an accident as a passenger with that driver, and the accident produced an injury. All jurisdictions that I know of require an accident report WHEN there is an injury.

(some states have a exception of just exchanging information if it is a non-injury accident)

Of course those actions will not endear you to your friend, but I think that bridge has been crossed (and burned) at this point. IMHO

(you could also contact your insurance carrier, and they could assist you in filing the claim!)

Thanks for the info, Grumpy, I certainly will be giving my son's insurance carrier all of the facts if they request them...the only reason I asked for the info. I explained this to my "Friend". I know that if my son was hurt worse than I thought that they would require correct info.

The bad thing about car accidents, is that a rear impact (or side for that matter) can do damage that may not show up until a day, or a week later. (sometimes longer!)

I have know several co-workers that were in accidents and attested to that. And I was hit by an inattentive driver. The only good thing was that I was working and it was a work vehicle! A day after, I was feeling sore!
