KBF SGT Trip Report
Well, I recently came into the possession of a Knott's Berry Farm ticket, so off I went today to the other Southern California's other theme park.
It was so dead . There were probably more employees than guests. None of the rides had a line, and, overall, it looked like one of those abandoned foreign theme/amusement parks that you find abroad or on the internet.
Now, does the compete and utter lack of people mean a lack of SGTs? Heck no, if anything, there were more than what you might see on a normal day at the DLR, not to mention quite a few SETs.
So, here goes my unique brand of Trip Report, follow my day at "America's 1st Theme Park" as seen in SGTs and SETs :) .
SCMT: Yes, SCMT rather than SET since I'm the one involved and I work for Disney, not KBF :p: .
I didn't see the part past the KBF entrance where Beach Blvd splits off and makes a left to reach their theme park parking. I ended up parking in the Parking Lot for their marketplace area and paying $5.00 more than I should have.
SET: Despite the fact that my ticket said fairly clearly on it that it was issued to TWDC - The Walt Disney Company, and I was wearing my DLR Cast T-Shirt ("I make the magic happen - since '55. Disneyland Resort Cast Member"). The ticket taker couldn't quite put her finger on where I worked.
SGT: The guest who kept insisting on being allowed to cross the Calico Railroad tracks despite the fact that there was a train (or a truck, I'm not sure what it was to be, honestly, it seemed to look like both) was coming down the track with bells ringing.
SET: The RO who was asking two guests (who were the only guests on the ride - there was no queue at all) if they were sick to their stomachs yet .
SGT: A guest who asked her BF if "this ride spins around as it goes" as said ride did just that over her head.
SGT: Guests berating a poor Custodial employee about the fact that everything was closed, despite the fact that there were probably less than 500 people in the park .
SGT: Said guests demanding refunds for their tickets from the aforementioned Custodial employee. Despite the fact that the tickets say "No Refunds - Rain or Shine" on them, and the fact that someone changing out Trash Cans is probably not equipped to process a ticket refund anyway.
SET: Employees texting on their Cell Phones since there was no one in the park. I might be applying a Disney mentality where it doesn't belong, but it still doesn't seem right.
SGT: The people, on my way out, who didn't seem to get the whole 'get your hand stamped so you can come back' concept. On a side note, I now understand why we insist on hand-stamping the left hand - KBF stamps the right.
Finally, I want to take the opportunity to send a shout out to a group of CMs/Employees who don't seem to get much mention either at the DLR or at KBF, but who should.
A side effect of wearing my DLR Cast Shirt (and using a Partners Credit Card) was discovering the number of DLR CMs who hold down second jobs at KBF. Given how slow it was, I had the chance to talk to many of them, and in almost every case they relayed the same story. About how they needed to work there in order to support themselves, and about how KBF management and supervision seemed to not really give a flying a** about them. In almost every case, they said they would rather be at the DLR exclusively, if they could only support themselves by doing so.
What got me was that, in every case, despite not being at Disney and subject to its rules, and despite the stuff they're going through, they were standing examples of the Service that Disney Theme Parks are known for.
Anyway, I just want to commend those CMs/Employees who despite all the conditions, continue to provide "Legendary Guest Service" (or the Cedar Farm/KBF equivalent) to their guests at both parks :D: .

Nice!!
Somewhere I heard that a DLR CM can't work for Knott's at the same time, except for Haunt. they would make you choose.
I hated working for Knotts'. I never regretted leavind, besides the fact the people I met.

LOL! I did that same thing the last time I went to KBF...and I do mean the LAST TIME! Ha ha!glendalais wrote:I didn't see the part past the KBF entrance where Beach Blvd splits off and makes a left to reach their theme park parking. That was an awesome trip report, Glendalais (and happy belated birthday, BTW), you have keen eyes and ears!
For me it has gotten to the point where I just compare every thing there with DLR, and it's so frustrating I just can't stand it, and I annoy the heck out of DH or anyone else that is willing to go with me with my complaining!

Re: KBF SGT Trip Report
Sounds like the guests sure haven't changed--stupid as ever. If what was on the track at Calico R.R. wasn't the train, but looked like a silver bus, that was the Galloping Goose. They usually run that on slow days when it's not worth running the train. Interesting how they kept the park open if they had only 500 guests--when I worked there, they closed if the park had fewer than 1000. Normally, using a cell phone would get you termed if you used it in front of the guests, never mind while operating a ride. But texting while operating a ride? Shoot, management must be hiding in their offices to not see that.

Oh, it wasn't the ROs, it was more like the Foods, Stores, and Games people.felinefan wrote:Sounds like the guests sure haven't changed--stupid as ever. If there were ROs texting while operating rides, I would have complained to the state. That's just unacceptable, even for Knott's.
And yep, that's what it was. A Silver Bus hurtling down the railroad tracks. It was among the oddest things I've ever seen at an amusement park.
Thanks for the Birthday wishes :D: .Ms. Matterhorn wrote:LOL! I did that same thing the last time I went to KBF...and I do mean the LAST TIME! Ha ha!

Yep, that was an issue with me. I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't Disney. I probably looked a tad bit crazy as I freaked out about the lack of themed costumes/uniforms and Employees pointing with one finger.

It is one of only a handful of Galloping Gooses ever made, about 7 total and the first was scrapped. You got to see a part of American railroading history that few get to see outside of a museum.

Except for the track it looks like something you'd see wandering through the Hashberry in San Francisco or the Golden Triangle in Humboldt County during harvest festival.mechurchlady wrote:

I thought y'all were being melodramatic or something saying that the Galloping Goose looks like a silver bus but boy was I wrong. It does look like a bus, wow.
Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long.
We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious…

Re: KBF SGT Trip Report
Actually, Churchy, there are about half-a dozen Galloping Geese around; most are in Colorado. I got this info from the engineers when I worked there. Originally, they were built during the Depression as a cost-effective means of hauling miners and railroad personnel through the mountains when there weren't enough people to make it worth running a train. There were 7, and briefly an 8th-- that one was built for a town in Texas, who, when it was delivered, found they lacked the funds to pay for it, so it was taken back to Colorado and dismantled.
Somewhere there's a Goose running on tires, ferrying tourists around town; Google Galloping Goose, and I believe you'll find some more info. I think only one or two Geese are on display only, not running. #3 at Knott's is one of a couple still running on tracks. It was easy to do the Goose than the train--no real safety check, only one Bandit and engineer needed, and no spiel. Only real problem we had was large groups--the Goose only holds 24 people in back, 6 in the cab with the engineer, no standees other than the conductor and the Bandit allowed, yet there would be school groups who insisted that they had to stay together. And then of course you have kids--or morbidly obese people--who rock the Goose, which has the potential to derail it.
Of course, the heffers don't rock it on purpose, but it's their size that causes the instability. It's the kids who rock it for kicks.
