When a Happy Birthday becomes a "Sorry I even mentioned it"

Post by Pinkisweet » Mon Sep 08, 2008 1:55 am

One thing I simply don't understand is people getting birthday buttons and not wearing them to be seen or they seem sour when you tell them nicely "Happy Birthday". I mean, why bother going to City Hall or where ever you went to get one, you took that time to get one for a reason.

I have come by a mother who detested it when someone wished her a happy birthday, yet she was sporting a button and a young boy was a total brat and unappreciative when nicely told happy birthday.

Any thoughts?

Young boy probably was even aware that it was his birthday... he was probably under the impression that his birthday was sometime in the next 6 months.. (if ya know what i mean)..

As for the lady... who knows what type a day she had.. it may not have been her brithday either.. or maybe it was, and her family MADE her wear it.. some poeple just don't like being the center of attention.

But it sucks..

One day i will get to Disney on my birthday and will be ALL smiles..

We always end up going to WDW during my birthday. A number of years ago, the CM checking us in gave me the birthday button and said that I was to wear it the entire length of our stay. It was nice, but after a few days, I would rather the CM's give the attention to the little kids with the button!

flash forward (redacted) years. So now, I only wear the button on my actual birthday, and then take it off. Since DW is starting the scrapbook thing, I put the year on it, and take the buttom home. she can stuff it in a book with the other stuff, or we can put it with the pins, etc in a shadowbox.

Personally, I think the little kids get a much better charge out of a stranger (CM) wishing them a happy birthday!

We took our grandsons to DLR for the middle ones birhtday (9 years old at the time) and he was just amazed that strangers knew his name and the fact that it was his birhtday!

And of course we got a lot of pictures of him with Mickey, Pluto, and so forth!
(you know, so his parents can show them to his girlfriends when he is older, hehehehehe)

I love the attention that I get anywhere and I'm 38! So keep it coming :)

Jungle Cruise Guide: OK, who has a birthday today?
Me [pointing to girlfriend at the time]: She does.
Her: No I don't!
JCG [gives me lots of $#%$@ for trying to pick on girlfriend]

A few minutes later....

Girlfriend: Wait, it is my birthday after all, isn't it? I just automatically said no.

Sigh.

Hope that JCSkipper gave your girlfriend the same treatment he gave you for being a SG.

This summer, I had the character attendant have the line at Pooh's Playground sing Happy Birthday to me while waiting for the characters to come back out. And 2 years ago my friend had the crowd in front of the castle do the same thing (this was before Spectro). Both times I was embarassed (I get embarassed easily), but I loved the fact they went out of the way to do that. I always make sure to say happy birthday to someone with a button. Why would you bother to get one, if you would get upset?

I will be your guide for this magical journey into the movies. It's the perfect job for me, because I love movies! Is everybody ready? Great, because it's showtime. Ready when you are, CB!

I'm celebrating my birthday this November at WDW, and I plan to enjoy and appreciate any birthday wishes I receive. I might even hug the CMs who bother to wish me Happy Birthday (if it's okay with them).
One year I was buying a visor at the gift shop at Pirates and the clerk/CM noticed my button and burst into the Happy Birthday song while she was ringing up my purchase. She had a great voice, and I snapped a picture of her singing exuberantly at the top of her voice. One of those special little memories that stays with you - a magical moment for my scrapbook, too. ;)

If I am Greeting at Plaza Inn on the porch, and it's crowded inside with lines, and people are waiting, I'll break the crowds up into smaller groups as they process in, and stop at a child with a bday button. I ask if anyone's sung the Birthday song to the child, and if they haven't I'll ask the family or the child if they want people to sing to them. If they say Yes, I'll have some of the family step aside so people can see what's going on at the top of the stairs, and make an announcement, that "This is my new friend so and so, and he/she's celebrating their (insert number) Birthday. On the count of three, will you help me sing Happy Birthday to So and so? One two three!" Then I tell the child after the singing is over."This is your chance, Take a deep breath and yell "Thank you!" Some kids will do that... others just get shy.
