So....what DO I say to a CM

Post by Sunshine36616 » Tue Sep 02, 2008 11:38 am

I'm heading to WDW this October, it's my 4th trip in two years. I found this board in time for my trips so I've managed to avoid making too big of an arse of myself.

I know the usual questions and comments are a no-no:

"Do they pay you a lot?"
"I bet you get tired of people/kids/yelling/walking etc."
"I bet that person gets hot in that Mickey/Pluto/whoever costume."

So in fantasy land, if you had the perfect guest, what would they say? Would just a general pleasantness suffice? No funny comments or are funny comments okay?

Just something I was thinking about. Thanks for all of your hard work :)

I kept my comments to "your doing such a great job" and "thanks for making our time here special/fun/amazing"

The CM's are overworked and over criticized and severely under praised.

A good general rule is to avoid asking/saying the obvious. You already seem to have the right idea.

That doesn't mean CMs aren't up for a little fun and joking around. Personally, I often wear something eye-catching like my monorail hat or a funny t-shirt. That's a great conversation started with CMs and fellow guests alike.

Saying thank you is a simple way to brighten a CM's day too. They get all the rude comments but not nearly enough thanks. If someone really makes your day magical, you can leave a compliment in Guest Relations.

I always try and make them know that WE really appreciate what they do for us as guests! Even though some of the "others" (SG's!!) don't seem to notice them until they have a complaint!

I try and at least say "Thank you" to all the CM's as they help me board, or as we leave. What is fun is if you catch a CM get rotated from the boarding part to the exit part and thank them twice :D:

Thanks for the suggestions!

I like Syndrome's idea about wearing something to start a conversation. Hopefully at least that would lead to some different conversation.

I worked in a small science museum with an IMAX for 3 years. And some guests think they are so witty, but guess what, I've heard that joke/comment 342,184,911 times and some days I just want to throttle them.

I can't imagine not saying "Thank you." It must be my good southern upbringing lol. That just seems so normal to me.

i automatically assumed "thank you" was automatically being said, but now that i think about it..

some people paid $5453.39 to go on that ride, so they don't have to say thank you do they?

Without the CM's Disney wouldn't be magical...

also, most all of them will stay in charactor totally.
which is their job, they are who they are.
i.e. ask them about money and a princess might say like,
well, prince only gives me 25 farlings a week or something like that.
i.e. Aurora is Aurora. sort of like asking a renefair actor how they like the cubs game. they might say, no bears live near them.

When in guest mode, I always try to complement CM's in a little way. In Epcot's Morocco, I had told one of the cashiers how beautiful her curly hair was. I met Daisy at the Flower and Garden pavillion, I said to her, "Looking gorgeous, as always Miss Daisy!" Even if it's quick service, I stand and be polite and not look annoyed if my food takes a long time getting to me. I simply say, "Thanks graciously!" When they finally get it to me.

Just show plain kindness and graciousness, all will go fine.
