Although that story doesn't specifically mention it, I think the funniest thing about it is that article the last copyright extension act was nicknamed the "Mickey Mouse Protection Act" because it was seen as primarily being backed by the Walt Disney Company to keep Mickey Mouse under copyright.

Trademarks don't expire unless they are unused or unenforced (and no one would ever accuse Disney of not enforcing its intellectual property). I'm pretty sure the name "Mickey Mouse" is trademarked, so I don't think any copies could be called "Mickey Mouse"; I wonder if any legal types here can say how a depiction of the old Mickey would be covered by trademark law. If, say, "Steamboat Willie" became part of the public domain would you be able to make new cartoons with a "Steamboat Willie" style mouse, or would that violate trademark and you could just use clips of the actual "Steamboat Willie" cartoon? Walt Disney still uses the "Steamboat Willie" style mouse on a lot of merchandise, so I would guess any trademark rights to it would still be enforceable, but IANAL.

Going through a copy of the Western Garden Book, they have a listing for "Mickey Mouse plant". Though I'll be darned if I can find it in my copy. It figures. But it's called that because the leaves or seedpods resemble a very famous pair of ears. I'll try to look it up online.

Last night, I was online and got the song title "Morning Report" from "The Lion King" in my head; it had been quite a while since I'd seen the movie, so I decided to refresh my memory. (Thanks to Zazu for the memory of reading his page of dialogue/ ride ratings between himself and Iago, specifically the one where Zazu has a rough start one morning and has to depend on Iago and Swedish Chef to get to Pride Rock to give the morning report, where this originated.) So, I do a search for Morning Report, and came up with several sites; first, I watched the video clip from the movie, but since the dialogue between Mustafa and Simba drowned out part of Zazu's song, afterward I clicked on the link http://www.geocities.com/bandraptor/lyr ... eporte.htm for the words I'd missed. What I found were a few words I seriously doubt would ever appear in a Disney movie. After re-viewing the video, I clicked on the link http://www.allmusicals.com , and got the real deal.
Does Disney legal know about this, and do you think they'll do anything about it? I mean, I hate it when people take copyrighted material that is not in the public domain and turn it into something the creator would never do (example: T-shirt of a Mexican Mickey flipping off all and sundry.) . :mad:

I think you have discovered the area of copyright law called "fair use". This permits things to be copied, quoted, or parodied without permission if done in the right way. Comic lyrics is a classic situation that case law has clearly decided in favor of the parodists (including the obscene ones).

I can assure you that Diseny's legal department is well aware of this sort of thing on the web. I watched the traffic on AOTW when it was active, and one particular office of Disney in Burbank was a regular visitor. Just a fan? Possibly, but they visited on far too regular a basis at exactly the same time each week.

AOTW has avoided any problems with Disney because each page bears a disclaimer acknowledging Disney's copyrights, and because it has never offered to sell anything, including advertising.

Now if I were to put the two birds on a t-shirt with some quote from the site, that would likely be a very different situation in law, and in my employment status!
