Deck the car?

Post by GrUvGrL » Tue Jul 22, 2008 11:14 pm

My SO, kids, and mother in law and I are all heading for WDW next Friday. We've decided to drive down from Markham, Ontario, Canada

We have 3 kids in transport and we have been busy trying to find things to make their drive a fun one! Movies (mostly Disney of course), colouring books, games... etc... We bought classic Disney wall decals and window markers and plan to let the kids decorate the "Disneymobile" for the trip down. We know that this will make us stand out like a sore thumb, but well... so does our license plates!

I thought it would be fun, the kids seem excited to draw all over the car (How many times is that gunna happen?) And we will take pics for their scrap books, so they can remember our crazy and fun trip forever!

This is my first time going to WDW my excitement level on a scale of 1 - 10 is about 5,743,735,435,732.

Here is my very simle question... is this a SG thing to do?

P.S. Please be gentle this is my first post.

I don't see this as SG's in making.

I see this as normal excitement in travelling to one of the most magical places on earth. This is something to enjoy.

If you read here further, you will see what makes a SG. The first sign of a SG is someone who does not respect others, guests and CM's alike.

Welcome, I'm sure the marsupial welcoming committee will be here soon to properly welcome you.

Hmmm, first of all, welcome, and keep posting here!!

It's only an SG thing if you ram other cars on the way to WDW because they are in your way!!!

If you have laptop, you should have the kids (and yourself) make a log of the trip with your observations. Possibly you could post SOME of your insights on such a trip here!

Its interesting, because DW and I have been talking about a cross country trip for fun!

Back in the 1970's we lived in Oregon. Around Christmas time we got into the car and drove to Disneyland. 7 of us in a VW bus. I remember it taking us 2 days to drive there.

You will be fine with the kids. My parents made us read, do homework and had us to the alphabet game. Those were the good old days.

Now that us kids have grown up we are AP's and enjoy the parks when we can. Welcome aboard! :p:

You guys are great!!

LMAO - The roads will be safe from me and my excited self. I'll be on kid duty while Canuikstan (SO) and his mom take the wheel all the way down!!

As far as documenting the trip... I will have my laptop. We have also bought each of the kids a digital camera so that they can take pics during the trip at their own will during the course of our stay, so that when we come back they can each make a family scrapbook project of their vacation for them to keep.

I so don't want to have any of you people who work so hard at creating the magic moment for us to think "Another family of SG's come and gone" cause that would really suck.

We're not going to have the best time ever at the expensive of giving anyone a hard time and reading the forums has made me more aware of that.

I was going to suggest getting each kid a digi cam, make sure you can download the pics to your laptop so they can take lots of pics. We drive to DL all the time, its between 6 and a half and 8 hours depending on traffic and stops. If you have hand held video games take them, often you can find small, magnetic car games to play, there used to be a bingo game that filled in the spaces with things you see on the road. Also, have them look for lisence plates from different states and see can see the most on the way down. If you can leave late at night and drive through the night, that will give you 8 to 12 hours with kids sleeping also. Map out your route and see what there is interesting to see along the way, mountians that sort of thing, they might be mesmerized by the passing landscape for a while. Ill be your all very excited, first trip and all, I know I am and I've been a few times, I've seen adults at the parks more excited than the kids, I think thats great. Make sure someone paints WDW or bust on the back of the car so everyone knows where your going.

Have a great time.

When I was a kid, my parents would drive us down to WDW every February. Well, they'd drive to Miami with a stop off at WDW. It was fun and boring at the same time.

Some day I want to recreate that trip for nostalgia purposes. If you have the spare time, stop at the roadside attractions, like South of The Border. They can be fun in a kitchy sort of way.

South of the Border! Ugh! :p: Great for fireworks, though!

This seems like a cool idea! Just make sure that it doesn't affect others. I'd suggest doing the decoration *before* you leave, that way the driver can check and make sure they can still see adequately all around the vehicle. (I'm only thinking of this because some moron almost killed me the other day by not looking around before pulling into traffic...)

There are lots of other cool things you can do to up the excitement ante. Look around the web for other ideas (All the Evil Board Xes out there are chalk-full of ideas). One of my favorites for kids is the "Fairy God Mailer." Getting someone to mail your kids cards (or postcards or whatever) "signed" by a favorite character and sent from the Orlando area to your home prior to your visit. The postmark is what makes it really "authentic".

Planning surprises and getting totally psyched are definitely not SG things to do. I'm a big fan of daily surprises before and during a Disney Vacation and my "family" is all over age 21!

SGTs involve self-centeredness, feelings of entitlement, and a complete disregard for others (which is darn near three ways of saying the same thing). We're all Disney Kids here, otherwise we wouldn't be here!

Now get out there and have fun, and remember, if the mean CMs won't let you do something, scream until management makes them! It's your right because you paid a lot to be there! :D:

As a local, I often see tourists in decorated cars and personally I think it's very cool.
