Escalators are dangerous, if you do the wrong thing. I know of a person(adult) who is now quadriplegic because his clothing got caught in an escalator.
I think inattention to the child/where child's feet were caused this one. :(

i fail to see where the SHOE caused the problem? The Escalator chewed up the girls foot...what would the shoe do to facilitate this?

You used to hear about this happening with flip-flops too. What it is is, the soft rubber/plastic shoe tends to cling to the escalator mat, so you can't readily slide your foot away, you have to lift it. To see what I mean, wear a pair of rubber soled sandals while walking on a rubberized or plastic mat with a ribbed texture. Your sandal will usually catch at the sides and corners, causing an accident. The sides of the escalator are a "pinch point", where anything like a rubber flipflop or plastic Croc or other footwear can get caught, pulling the foot into the escalator.

Kids should wear leather sandals; as any motorcyclist can tell you, the reason leather is better than plastic or other synthenics is that if your flip your cycle while wearing leather boots, your foot will slide along the pavement. Wear rubber or plastic, etc. shoes, and they'll grab the pavement, pulling your foot under you and the cycle, causing injury. Same thing with a real leather jacket: you slide, no road rash.

Of course, if an elevator is available, it would be best if you take your kid on that instead of the escalator.

Leathers while riding bikes are essential. You'll shed leather instead of skin as you slide in. One key thing with leather is they must be tight so they don't bunch up while sliding.
