The Gospel according to Disney

Post by SRT_GB » Wed Aug 11, 2004 2:42 am

There's a new book called "The Gospel According to Disney: Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust" by Mark Pinsky. It's basically about the religious overtones found all over Disney films. There's a chapter towards the end about the theme parks and another one about the Eisner era.

I read the chapter on the theme parks and found out all kinds of interesting stuff. The author argues that Disney theme parks are right up there with the Vatican, Mecca, and the Taj Mahal as places for pilgrimages. It kinda ties to what Polar said in another thread that kids in so-called third world countries know that Disneyland has a castle. He also talks about religious services at the resorts and even mentions an incident where some extremist Christian groups tried to infiltrate Gay Days. I didn't read any of the rest of the book since I'm not too familiar with Disney feature films, but I did find that chapter on the theme parks very eye-opening and it made me want to read another book on the parks that this author referred to.

Just thought I'd share with you guys.

Pinsky is the religeon reporter for the Orlando Sentinel. An exerpt from the book was in Sunday's paper, and is online at http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/opi ... 3776.story.

I was there for that event. Stood not ten feet away from the prayer circle and waited for it to happen. Funny as hell the way it turned out!

Would you please share the title and author of that other book with us?

Sorry, it slipped my mind when I made my original post. It's "Disney: The Mouse Betrayed" by Peter and Rochelle Schweizer. There's another one that I can't seem to find called "The Disney Universe: Morality Play" by Michael Real.
