4th of July Fireworks SGTs

Post by glendalais » Sat Jul 05, 2008 3:21 am

A new fireworks show, Disney's Celebrate America: A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky, was supposed to debut at both Disneyland Park and the Magic Kingdom Park at WDW.

This show will be shown only once a year on 4 July, and is the first show since Fantasy in the Sky to be shown at both US parks, and the first to be debuted at the same time.

I'm not sure how it went off in Florida, but here in California...."Due to winds at higher elevations...." ;)

Yep, that's right :D: , the once-a-year fireworks show that tens of thousands of guests lined up in great numbers to watch....was cancelled by high winds.

I can only imagine the line at City Hall  .

Just wanted to put this up so CMs from other areas could share what I'm sure are the bountiful crop of SGTs that resulted last night. Alas, I was inside a restaurant, so other than a big rush, I didn't get any :( .

Try being GC out on MS/Hub area. I was going all over the place to try and get them to move. Yeah, it was fun. Yeah, I had enough till next year.

Fireworks make SGs swarm. I saw at least 3 get arrested for trying to “get closer” to them... (get in a restricted area near them)

They went off without a hitch last night at the Magic Kingdom AFAIK. They were perfect on the 3rd and also on Sunday (the full show was done 3 nights). Sunday wasn't announced to guests until that day and not to cast until the night before (though I don't believe most heard about it until Sunday) and was a rehearsal for the 3rd and 4th. They also did the show but without the perimeter launch sites on Monday.

I feel for the PAC and GR CMs, guests would naturally be upset that fireworks you can only see that night were canceled.

ARGH! Fireworks! I was PAC for the 4th the year that I worked attractions. We also had to direct traffic on the Teacups bridge. That was a nightmare. There were about five girls including myself, all of us petite. We had a rope set-up to close off the bridge, but by the time we got the call that it was time to close it (Main Street was filled to capacity) we could not get to the ropes. We had to barricade ourselves in with the park strollers people had abandoned. It didn't matter if somebody's family they could no go on Main Street and people were POd. It was one of the most stressful shifts I have ever worked.

High winds at DL? At Knott's-which is not that far from DL-our fireworks show went on as scheduled. I worked last night and it didn't seem windy. Of course, Knott's would have shot fireworks off regardless of the weather. :)
It was a decent display-though nothing like DL.

I had the HUB last night, and for Fantasyland, we had absolutely no congestion in our walkways (go team!) With the exception of a bumpy start to the hub swirl (thats to be expected) we had all walkways clear and moving within 10 minutes of the fireworks ending. After the 10:30 spectro, we had the teacups bridge clear and by 11, we had taken down the teacups bridge ropes. at 11:45 we took down everything else except northeast gazebo, which we took down during the 12:30 spectro.

I heard that all traffic in Fantasyland by pan/small world bottleneck had stopped completely at 8:30. We got a call from the duty manager asking us how our area in the HUB was, and when he found out how clear we were he told us how we should have been in the land that night!

Disneyland has had in the past small fires from fireworks. While it may not seem serious sparks from fireworks can be vary dangerous especially around the older buildings. It is the law and fire department that says no to fireworks over a certain wind speed. Also the Stinger, Sun Wheel, and that swinging ride with Zeppelins have a maximum wind speed.

And now the news from Plaza Inn front. People crowded into the restaurant to eat, and lots came out and did the usual "I'm camping out here saving a table for my family so we can see the fireworks" routine. It got so full that we closed the restaurant down. People guarded the front and side gates- including myself, and if someone was in the restaurant, and then was returning to Plaza Inn due to having family inside etc, but heading to the restrooms then we stamped their hands. After the High Winds cancelled the fireworks, bunches of people left, and we reopened the restaurant as tables were cleared.

At one point I too was greeting out front-before the side gate guarding, and limiting the families entering to three and four parties at a time due to the seating issue.
