Just before I left work Fri morning I began to notice that the lights were wobbling and the computer monitor (that is on an arm) was wiggling. I quickly decided that we were having an earthquake. It was not bad, I have had a rougher jostling from "magic fingers". :D:
The quake wasn't a problem but I spent the entire last 20 min of my shift answering the phones. I finally gave up and answered the phone, in one breath, with "WILL Radio.Yes that was." As quick as I could assure the caller that they weren't imagining it, and hang up, the phone would ring again. It seemed that every single person awake at 4:40am in the Champaign, IL area was calling me to find out if that was an earthquake.
Well, I'm finished with being completely OT for now. Just thought I'd give my 1st hand experience with something in the news. :)

In California, that would be classified as a "turn over and go back to sleep."

I remember the two years I spent in Japan, it seemed like we had one once a week or so!

It was maybe a 5.2. That's like a semi going by in California. When the 7.2 hit in Northern Cali I was teaching a class to a bunch of international students. Many didn't know how to spell earthquake. We had blown out windows, equipment cabinets on their side, interior doors jammed and because the buildings were built on bay fill, we sunk three inches in fifteen seconds.
Talk about an E ticket ride!
Don't be fooled by appearances. In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stuntmen.

I couldn't. They made a very quick exit stage left. One woman ran down the hallway so fast her screams had a Doppler effect.

here's one of my favorite sites; it's the CA 24 hour aftershock prediction map, but there are tabs at the top of the page that help you navigate throughout the site. It includes earthquake history for all the states as well as world countries, plus other interesting features. There are links to tsunami and volcano pages as well.

What I think is interesting is how Alaska is the most seismically active state in the nation, yet when people hear the word "earthquake', they immediately think California.
