IT is interesting that thy decided to return them, and that Disney just happened to "give" them some money for scholarships!

Disney should put these on display at either DL or WDW. These are stunning. I would love to see these up close.

What puzzles me is how the pieces were sent to places, like the museum and the university, that didn't have a place for them. You'd think that they'd know that the pieces wouldn't fit into the rest of the exhibits in the museum, and that Chiba University had no art program, so why send them there?

Don't be an SG and read the article next time. The art was sent to Japan as a travelling display to promote Disney movie, increase sales of Disney labelled merchandise and get the Japanese to better understand Disney and thus want to see all stuff from Disney. The show finally closed and was sent with Walt's permission to a museum that then gave it to the University.

Disney said that the art — cels, backgrounds, preliminary paintings and storyboard sketches — was part of a collection that was handpicked by Walt Disney himself. It was sent to Japan in 1960 for a touring exhibition timed to the opening of the film “Sleeping Beauty.” The exhibition opened at Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo in May of that year and traveled to 16 other stores throughout Japan.

After the department store tour, Disney donated the artwork to the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. But the material was not considered a good fit for its permanent collection, so the museum gave the pieces to Chiba University to enhance the study of the visual arts.

What puzzles me is how the pieces were sent to places, like the museum and the university, that didn't have a place for them. You'd think that they'd know that the pieces wouldn't fit into the rest of the exhibits in the museum, and that Chiba University had no art program, so why send them there?

I guess they didn't offer to return them back then, being polite! What is interesting is that some of the cell's that were sold at Disneyland havn't shown up as much.

Think about it, Disnyeland souvenirs often got trashed, damaged or lost. How many people have actually kept stuff from the parks. Even 20 years ago people did not see the item as being worth a thousand dollars. Who knew that a Barbie doll would be worth big buckx.
