Fun with vehicles...on Main Street!

This is the place to tell us about the stupid things fellow employees can do.

Fun with vehicles...on Main Street!

Post by Cloud Buster » Sun May 16, 2004 1:44 am

The other night I was working Shuttle L, which makes its last run from the headroom to N-19 a few hours after park close to get the last batch of character laundry from the characters coming back from "Goofy's Kitchen" at DLH. By the time I was ready to go, control had called all clear, so I took a shortcut via the Egghouse gate, and drove up Main Street, though Matterhorn way, and then the Small World gate. It was really cool not only driving on Main Street, but seeing the castle all lit up at night with no guests there too.

In my short time in my department, I've heard of at least three interesting incidents where someone on our crew had a vehicle on MS.

The first was when a lead, and three crew members took two electric carts (2 in each) and were heading for somewhere near the Egghouse. The lead told that all clear had been called, when in fact he had no idea if it'd been called or not. Apparently, the park was clear to the HUB, and they got to MS and soon realized it was still full of guests. A DL security guy started freaking out and yelling at them, telling them to get away. The cart with 2 crew was driving in front and had no idea what to do, so just tried to keep their cool and kept driving, looking for support or instructions from the lead in the cart behind them. It didn't take him too long to realize that the lead had simply turned and run before security noticed him, leaving the other two crew on their own!

In a similar incident, a CM was working PM Tram 1 (kind of like the BOH tram, but scheduled for transporting for parades and Disney University, etc). Hoping to take a shortcut (or just a different route), thinking the park was all clear -- it was in fact, clear to the HUB again. So just as with above, he drove down Main Street with guests still in the park...only this time, instead of an electric cart....he was in a TRAM!!

The last, and my personal favorite, occurred when the park actually was clear of guests...either early in the morning or really late at night. Two CMs had an electric cart each with various items in the back...each including a push broom. They were a little bored, and one of them was struck with inspiration. They drove to opposite ends of Main Street, armed themselves with their push brooms.....and had a jousting match!! :)

Without a stopwatch or anything, just counting "one-onethousand" style, my personal best elapsed time from Town Square to the Hub in a 15 passenger van is about 12 seconds. Yes, from a standing start.

If you ever told me that I'd drag race down Main St., I probably wouldn't have believed you. Things change, no?

Right now we have a long term rental vehicle, a Ford F250. We own a Chevy Silverado, but it is a crew cab and is much heavier. But the Ford has the same amount of torque, so it takes off so fast when you hit the gas....

I think I need to take it for a spin to the hub myself... :)
