Beam Me Up, Mickey!

The Star Wars connection continues to this day: this past weekend, where I was a sponsor at a church music camp, a kid came up out of the blue and told me I look like "Porkins from Star Wars IV."

Sigh.

All of our work stations are named for Star Wars, I even managed to get the NOC naming scheme into it. yoda was the old shell server, jabba is the new one, NOC work stations are rogues, my box is Kashyyyk, used to be Dagobah. Laptop used to be Bantha (switched to The Mac Pearl when I got my new one, as a nod to POTC). We also have a Boba Fett, Adi Galia and a Porkins!

I have a Jed Porkins action figure at home.

DOH! I typo'd it and didn't even notice :) You are correct, it is JEK Porkins, aka Red Six. In the expanded universe he is nicknamed "Belly Runner" due to his girth :D:

Heh "Jed Porkins" is Jek's distant cousin... tried making a fortune in Tibanna gas mining... and was hiding on Cloud City due to a gambling debt. No one knew he was there. until he moved to BevEr LiHills, that is... a lesser known Tibanna gas mine.

Nah, it is something I do on a regular basis thanks to my job. There are days when I think dealing with SG's for little money would be better...

Ah memories. I saw the first (fourth) SW film about a week after it was released. My brother's best friend's mother called my mother asking if us kids wanted to go see a movie with her son. Mom said sure. Turns out the other Mom was actually inviting MY mother to take us! :D: Sneaky. I wasn't at all interested in this stupid science fiction movie. But my brother and his friend wanted to see it so I was excited to go to the movies with them (I was three years older than either of them, but any excuse to see a movie). When the movie was over I was having tie fighter battles in my mind all night and my brother's best friend became my good friend since we both loved playing SW games. My brother thought the movie was stupid. Finally, after he'd complained about me stealing his friend, my mother told him to "pretend" to like it and to join our games, then maybe we'd play something HE liked too. Eventually he was so convincing he convinced himself and became a rabid fan as well.

My other early SW memory is taking my Dad to see it. A few months after it was released we were on vacation when my brother started feeling sick. We ended up taking him to the hospital and he ended up with some sort of virus that the doctors never could really diagnose. He was there for a week. I was left staying at a friend's house the whole time (we were luckily in a town we'd once lived in and my old neighbor took me in while my parent's were at the hospital). My Dad wanted to spend some time with me since they'd been spending so much with my brother, so he asked what I wanted to do. I wanted to see SW again. Not really his cup of tea, but he reluctantly went and instantly became a fan as well.

Empire Strikes Back we saw on opening night since my Dad of all people really wanted to see it. I even had all the Burger King glasses because each week Dad would drive me through the drive through to get a Coke and a glass. He even bought me the poster at the movie theater even though it was $5! (Wow, $5! Imagine!)

Jedi I saw a million times. My best friend in high school and I were writing a SW trivia book. We skipped 7th period every Tuesday to go to the $1.50 showing. Sometimes were were the only ones in the theatre. We knew every line by heart of course, so we could actually act out the movie when the had the theatre to ourselves. The box office lady actually knew us by sight and printed the tickets without even asking what we were there to see.

When Episode I came out, my brother, who now lives in Los Angeles called. Did I want to come see it with him there, since we'd seen the first movie together? Of course I did. I flew out to LA and we waited in line for about six hours to see it at the Chinese Theatre on opening day. That was actually the longest I ever waited for a SW movie.

Oh, another memory. When SW aired on TV it was a huge event. Unfortunately, it was also on the same night as a two part Buck Rogers episode which I also adored. We didn't have a VCR in those days. I watched both shows by running back and forth between the TV in my parent's bedroom and the living room.

Oh, one more fun story. Not about me though. Seems George Lucas was having real problems while working on pre-production for Empire Strikes Back. He was having a lunch meeting with his wife, who was the editor on the project. He was extremely depressed, and finally she suggested that they go see a movie to take his mind off things. He agreed, not sure what he wanted to see. When they left the restaurant, they were near the Chinese Theater. He suggested they go see whatever the huge long line around the theatre was for, since that was obviously a popular movie. His wife had to tell him that everyone was in line for Star Wars - HIS movie!

OK Star Wars Geeks, I have a good one- I work with one of the Actors from the first Star Wars movie!
She actually did bookkeeping for the movie and they needing someone to wear masks for the Mos Eisley Cantina scene. She ended up in the final cuts, I've seen her picture and name in a book , and her name is on IMDB (Kim Falkinberg). Her Father was one of the co-producers of the Movie.
She is the coolest person and I am a big fan! I'll see if I can get MM and WW
a picture with her when they visit! :)

We skipped 7th period every Tuesday to go to the $1.50 showing. Sometimes were were the only ones in the theatre.

Ah, yes my sister and I were usually the only ones in the 10 am show too!!!

I ran around the neighborhood with bagel hair and with one of my aunt's white nightgowns over my clothes when I was six. Kid next door donned a bathrobe as a jedi robe.

I had hair as long as Leia's when Jedi was out and recreated all the braided hairstyles on a daily basis- I still have my official Star Wars Fan Club Empire Strikes Back fatigue jacket that I saved up months of allowance to buy.

My 12 year old wears it now! Proudly! *sniff*

One of the first things my husband ever did to court me was play a wav file of Solo saying "You could use a good kiss!" in the chat room we frequented whenever I came into the room LOL.

In third grade at recess, I always pretended I was Wilma Deering :)

If only I had the memorbilia my mother made me throw away in my teens (long story! it was a religious thing) I had original souvineer books from Episode 4 5 and 6, all the cards, so much stuff. . .I managed to hide one folder's worth in my things but then when I got divorced, that folder 'disappeared' along with my real autograph from Mark Hamill that I got after I wrote him a letter at the age of 12. My ex had a propensity to be very mean, and he knew it meant a lot to me :(
