Cudos to Old Key West

Post by SWTexasBelle » Sat Feb 23, 2008 9:57 pm

I just wanted to commend the wonderful CMs at Old Key West who went above and beyond to make my December trip great. On our first night there, my 6 year old son was standing on the rattan ottoman and fell. One look at his arm and I knew we were looking at a break. We called 911, and waited for the paramedics. "Kiss my arm and make it stop hurting, Mommy!" was what he said (broke my heart). Two ambulance rides later, he was splinted and spend the night in ICU at Florida hospital. While I was off with him at the hospital, they (I think it was Sarah and Elizabeth???) asked what they could do. I told him to tell them that we were there for my 18 year old daughter's birthday, and obviously it had been overshadowed. Anything they could do for her would be much appreciated. Not only did they get my son a wheelchair so his splinted (they don't put a cast on till the swelling goes down) arm would not be jostled, they arranged an Epcot fireworks cruise for my daughter, and when she came home there was a fabulous pile of pirate-themed gifts for her birthday. They didn't have to do any of this - but they did, and I am SO VERY THANKFUL to them for making my baby's birthday memorable, and helping us salvage the trip for my 6 year old.
And people ask me why I always want to go to WDW . . .

Another reason I love working for Disney World.

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

That is fantastic. I hope his arm is better! Poor kid! now you will have to take him back soon, to show him that he won't break his arm every time he goes to WDW!!

The CM's actions show why Disney is the best! Many people like to complain, but truth be known, at any other theme park or resort, I doubt if you could even come close to the attention that the WDW CM's give to the guests!

That is such a great story! It's kinda sad but when things go badly is when the most magic can happen!

I remember we had a woman whose personal ECV broke down at about 4:00 in the afternoon. She was so upset because she could not walk very far and didn't want to make her daughter (who was pregnant) push her. A Soarin' CM and I immediately called strollers and arranged for a No-Strings ECV for the woman and had them bring it over. She was so grateful that she started crying and hugging us. That was probably one of my proudest moments. It's amazing how something as simple as this can really make someone's day!

Hope your little boy feels better! Make sure to drop Guest Relations a line and thank those CMs!

Happy to report the arm is all better. We spent the rest of the trip being an object lesson - when parents in line asked us what happened, and we told them, they'd turn to their children and say "See! I TOLD you not to jump on the bed!" It certainly was a memorable trip. And Jackson has beat his sister, who has a scar from a run-in at the age of 5 with a bed frame at Port Orleans.
I can't imagine why anyone would pretend to need a wheelchair - using one is a pain in the neck, and the wait in the sun at the Haunted Mansion is the pits (near the hearse where you wait for a CM to take you to the Servant's Quarters). I actually missed the sign for the wheelchair entrance at Pooh, and went in the regular line (!) Poor CMs then had to help me move the wheelchair out of the way. Sorry, Pooh CMs - I'm sure I looked like a SG.
I keep meaning to write the letter, but will do so FOR SURE this week. I praised them to the skies while I was there. They did all this just because they are so wonderful - not because I was threatening a lawsuit (!), or being nasty - just to spread some pixie dust. I will be hard pressed to beat my daughter's 18th birthday - the cruise with Captain Mike was incredible. Hmmm . . . maybe I can take her to DL Paris for her 21st.
