It's like that in TN, too. The liquor stores sell only liquor, and it's just stacked in boxes in the aisles, no fancy posters or neon signs. It's all very serious. :( kinda makes you feel like you're doing something bad.

I guy that I know that grew up there, was telling me that it was several religious movements and churches that worked for those laws. I can believe it!

In Oregon, you can't buy wine or beer at the liquor store, you get them at the grocery store. There is also no liquor at the grocery store. You can get stuff to go with liquor (mixers, glasses, etc.) but that's it.

The county I grew up in has some pretty strict blue laws. Up until relatively recently no liquor could be sold in the county at all and no beer on Sundays or after 11:00pm the rest of the week.

The residents finally voted to allow liquor to be sold but the Sunday and night laws are still in place. The county is also being very strict on how many liquor licenses they give out.

Wow, didn't realize that they STILL had blue laws!!

I remember when I was in South Carolina once, the local police shut down a Ice Cream place on a sunday, because they had a pinball machine on. I guess it was part of a old blue law about gamblining devices on sundays, the whacky part was that he didn't serve alcohol! But I guess the law was written that any establishment that serves refreshments was subject to it.

I used to have a web site bookmarked that had all the strange laws for various states still on the books, I'll have to look for it.

I have (somewhere) a book entitled "the New Jersey Pickle ordinance and other bonehead legislation". My favorite was a law that if two trains approach a cross track both must come to a complete stop and wait until the other train has cleared the crossing before moving. But if both are waiting...

Here in my home town I saw one in that book that it is illegal for a "monster" to be within the city limits. I figure it either was inspired by a sleepless child or the fact that the county fair grounds are in the city and they were trying to prevent "freak shows". I later heard of a law still on the books here that several of the streets in downtown are "Horse only" but it is also on the books that horses are not allowed within the city limits. So by the rules there are several streets in downtown that are not allowed to be used by vehicles.

Yeah, some goofed up laws!! The one that I remember from the web site is that the city of San Francisco passed an ordance that it was illegal to detonate an atomic weapon within the city limits, and it was a misdemeanor!!

Leave it up to my state to come up with this one...

In certain sections of Pennsylvania many years ago, the Farmer's Anti-Automobile society set up some "rules of the road." In effect, they said:

1. "Automobiles traveling on country roads at night must send up a rocket every mile, then wait ten minutes for the road to clear."

2. "If a driver sees a team of horses, he is to pull to one side of the road and cover his machine with a blanket or dust cover that has been painted to blend into the scenery."

3. "In the event that a horse refuses to pass a car on the road, the owner must take his car apart and conceal the parts in the bushes."

It is Texas law that when two trains meet each other at a railroad crossing, each shall come to a full stop, and neither shall proceed until the other has gone. In one of those "true facts" books there was an explanation for this law. It seems that one of the state senators did not want a law passed. To keep this particular law from passing, he attached the train law to it. He hoped that his fellow senators would discover the train law attached, see how ridiculous it was, and not pass the laws. Nobody saw the the train law attached and passed both laws. This may not be the real reason, but it sounds good. And it might explain some of the laws we have to live with.
