From a guest: Disneyland was dirty, expensive, etc

Post by dazyhill » Fri May 21, 2004 11:27 pm

I work at Knott's but this belongs in the Disneyland forum. I had an eldery gentleman approach one of my clerks and proceeded to tell him how horrible DL was.
He said the park was dirty. He grumbled about how expensive the food was. (i.e. $15 for three sodas :?: ) He got sick on California Screamin. He felt the employees had forced smiles on.
Oh and he said that the manager at the RV park where he was staying at told him the Tower of Terror ride was all hype. To add insult to injury he pointed out the poor safety record of the rides (i.e. Columbia)
I happend to hear the conversation and told him that the Tower of Terror ride lived up to its name. It was one of the most inense rides I have ever ridden.
I stayed mum on the rest of the points he mentioned even though I hate it when guests complain about ride safety (or lack thereof). I believe 99% of all accidents are caused by guest stupidity.
I also stayed quiet because there is a policy I believe that discourages talking ill of other theme parks and attractions. Plus it wasn't worth arguing lest he think I was another rude theme park employee.
I have friends and a relative who works at DL. I know how hard it is to try to keep guests happy. This guest either visited DL on an "off" day or had a poor sense of observation and judgement.
I know DL does it dammdest to keep the park clean. For every person who throws away their trash properly, there are ten who don't. Multiply that by 10,000 or more and one sees how daunting the task can be.
Sure the food is expensive but at least its palatable. I find most of the food at Knott's concessions to be horrid and of poor value. Sure I'm spending $15 at Bengal BBQ for lunch, but at least I can eat it w/o gagging. :P
Forced smiles? What does a "natural" smile look like to you? Maybe you, the guest, should have smiled first.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that understand what you CM's are going through. We here at Knott's go through similar trials. Guests just don't understand how difficult a theme park job can be. We just need to keep working to do the best job we can. Forced smiles and all.

It's just like retail. Some guests have a predisposition against the park they're visiting. Some people just love to complain, so they spend all day looking for problems. They choose not to notice the 99 things out of 100 that went right, but ignore them, and make a HUGE deal out of the one thing that went wrong.

I've never known DLR to be what I would call "dirty" on stage. Backstage is another story....but on stage looks great most of the time.

I'm of the mind that there are many peoples out there who just 'have it in for Disney'. Who love to pounce on any bad news and then blow it up.
