Re: Need advice about a transfer
Hi guys,
After talking to my Cast Service Manager I'm seriously thinking about staying in Merchandise and becoming a coordinator. That's an extra dollar an hour off the bat, and I talked to one of the coordinators today and he said getting overtime as a coordinator isn't a problem even right now, he's working six days a week right now.

Ugh. Please can I comment on this?Bell Services are still Disney cast, but Valet has been outsourced, which leads to problems at the front door. Guests get pretty upset when they learn that they are expected to tip twice for a service that's unified at any decently run hotel.
We stayed at the Poly for 8 nights last September after a 3 year absence in trips from WDW. For me that's an eternity.
We saved and saved for this trip, and I'm a very good tipper so it adds up quickly. I tip everybody- from housekeeping (which should be a tipped position outright but that's another thread) to. . .well everybody tippable.
I was so mad because I was already exhausted from traveling when we arrived at the Poly and before I knew it, my husband was out of the car, the trunk of the towncar was open and someone was taking the bags out. I wanted my husband to wait until I checked to see if our room was ready- but alas it was too late.
By the time Disabled Woman here got out of the car and counted the kid and the elderly father, all the bags were gone.
THEN I go into the lobby and find out our room is ready!!!
Not only had my dad tipped the Valet, but then we had to wait almost an hour in the room for Bell Services to bring the bags and tip them too because the valets outside were like vultures and didn't give you a second to get your stuff together before descending on you!
Sorry for going off topic- Harry I hope you get that promotion and the extra $$$ then I can come visit you at the Confectionary when we're in town :)
But the separate valet and bell services. . .oy that really ticked me off.
Then, I had to tip again double when we had bell services come to take our bags to the airline check in thingy. . .which was such a convenience with 2 disabled people in the group and with 3 of the 4 of us sick as dogs by the time we were going home that I didn't care about tipping them I just wanted the luggage gone LOL.

(Note to self) Another good reason to stay at Ft Wilderness in a campsite. I drive my "luggage" right into my "room" and I only have to tip myself for any luggage handling. :D:February wrote:Ugh. Please can I comment on this?

Yeah, this is what I had when I realized how much money we'd just wasted- but what killed me more was the hour we spent waiting because everyone was so anxious to get to the MK!

But are they allowed to accept tips? I know from my sister that housekeepers are allowed to accept tips even though they are not a tipped classification, but I was under the impression that most of the non-tipped classifications are not allowed to accept tips.Zazu wrote:Officially, no.

One of my managers who used to be a concierge suggested concierge to me, but I didn't ask her about tips since it is a non-tipped classification.

As I said, it's a non-tipped position, but if we say no three times, we're allowed to accept it.HarryFromMarydelDE wrote:But are they allowed to accept tips?
So far, every time I've offered a tip to management, they've said something like, "You moron! Put that back in your pocket!"
The one time I did insist on turning over a tip, it wasn't cash. Some SG bought too much wine to fit into his luggage and left me with a nice bordeaux. Of course, part of the reason I handed it over was to watch my supervisor try to figure out what to do with it!
In sum, the tips I've received are trivial, even when compared to my salary. If you're thinking about a transfer, you'll get far more benefit from the upgrade to labor grade 10 than you will from your tips.

Re: Need advice about a transfer
Thanks for the info Zazu, I wasn't seriously considering a transfer to concierge, but I was curious. I try to learn as much as I can about the different roles, that way I have a good idea of what options are out there.Zazu wrote:As I said, it's a non-tipped position, but if we say no three times, we're allowed to accept it.

Re: Need advice about a transfer
My last couple days before I put in for the transfer, I turned off the MiMs system, and decided to, following the three-no rule, see just how much in tips I could collect. I turned about $60 into a manager, and said that when the box went down, that was just the money that was forced on me or that people said to take it three times (sometimes, they would just about assault me to get me to take the money). I told the manager that the way I got that money was just by providing the level of service that I felt Disney bus drivers should be providing, I was sorely disappointed in the service we were supposed to, and that I needed out of buses and into an area where the top management still understood that (at least, on the front line level) magic, or the appearance thereof, was the most important thing to present to the guest. He took the money, agreed with me that I probably didn't belong in buses, instead a park, in a location where I am expected to interact with guests in an entertaining way.
It's the best $60 I've ever given away.
