Shorty82 wrote:That has happened here. People built their houses right by Naval Air Station Pensacola and then started complaining about all the planes taking off and landing right over their heads. They were the idiots who built right by a major flight training base, that's not the Navy's fault and the Navy shouldn't have to suffer.
Hillsboro, OR, 2006. They had the Rose Festival Air Show (or was it Oregon International Air Show? Whatever) at the Hillsboro Airport, where they have had it the last twenty years. Well, over the 20 years, houses have popped up all around the airport, and as is bound to happen at an air show once in a while, a plane crashed and hit a house. Thankfully, no one was in it, three girl scouts had literally just walked away from the front door when the plane came down on the house, so the only person hurt was the pilot who was killed.

Within days, there were town hall meetings, press conferences, etc. demanding the airport be shut down immediately, and maybe even some lawsuits.

I actually love being in the flight path, because I love the sounds that plane engines make, but I know I am a rarity. My favorite place in the world is at the end of a runway (except when I am in the air in a small plane... or on a sail boat).

It was very sad to see all these people demanding the airport be shut down. Which was there first? The egg? Or the chickens that built their back yards around it?

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

Reid-Hillview is a small muni airport in southeast San Jose, CA that, for years, was out in the middle of nowhere on 180 acres. Suburbia got closer, the land got more expensive and some moron built a mall right under the landing glide path.

To paraphrase a well known saying, "If they build it someone will hit it" came true a couple of times. One plane bounced off the roof and was able to land safely but another hit the roof, flipped over, and ended up in the parking lot. A hue and cry was raised to shut down the airport (and make a killing developing it) but cooler heads prevailed. There is still a movement to convert (monitize) it to some other use.

Don't be fooled by appearances. In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stuntmen.
