Actually they have built a lot of very permanent buildings around the perimiter that make it hard to push the MK boundries out. I have studied the aerial photos closely and have found only two significant areas for expansion that can easily be made (besides the afore mentioned former 20k show building footprint). There is a fairly large undeveloped area across the tracks from Toontown Fair that could be used (if some way was designed to allow safe passage across the railroad). And if the skyway building was replaced with a show building that either allowed the "track plan" to go under the railroad (like the entrance to Space Mt) or over the train, there is a fairly large area that could be used between the train tracks and North World Dr, south of Space Mt. There is a lake there but even if it remains undisturbed there is room for a fairly substantial show building. Or if the lake was "reshaped" or "relocated" a single building the size of Space Mt or many smaller buildings could fit easily.
Every other side has either a show building or some substantial backstage area (like the parade storage and prep buildings behind Splash Mt) that block easy expansion. Even the apparent wilderness along the railroad at the back of the MK is an illusion. And even if expansion was contemplated in that direction there is no way to link it to the rest of the park as show buildings (Haunted Mansion/Small World etc) completely block any potential access.

There's one more plot to the southwest of Adventureland, roughly due-south of Pirates. But to build there they would a) have to pull an Indiana Jones Adventure and have a long, narrow access to it from the park. It would also have to contend with the railroad, parade route, and it would be taking out an access gate into the park. And b) would have to theme the Lagoon side of the building, as it would be visible from the Lagoon and monorail. (I'd have to look at a map again, but there'd also the possibility that depending on how tall it is, it might block the view of the Castle from some rooms at the Floridian)

built an enclosed route to a new land or ride. They did that for a lot of DL like pirates, mansion, splash mountain. The subway to hell, oops, I mean Sunny Acres.

(nod) Now there is one more solution that isn't very likely. They could go UP. If and where theming of an area could support it it could be possible to put a second story on some of the existing buildings. Either the entrance cue could ramp up to the upper floor (which in places like Small W would be quite a way up) or have a "ground floor" entrance and load with a "vehicle" working its way uphill to an upper level show building. For example the show building for Pan and Pooh have a fairly low ceiling and so a stacked similar sized dark ride could be situated over those dark rides. I think that there is an upper level to these buildings that may be storage or office spaces for the surrounding buildings (or even some of the equipment rooms for the attractions below). But it should be possible to duplicate much of that upwards to a new third floor. Of course such a drastic move would nearly shut down many areas of the park while an almost complete tear down and rebuild happened. And the taller structures would require all the surrounding lands to be somewhat redesigned to shield the back side of the taller buildings from view.
So while it is, in my opinion, very very very unlikley that is another option. And this can work in may other locations around the parks. For example the Studios would very easily work with multi level attractions. tho such as stack would be best with relatively small dark ride type attractions. But can you imagine an attraction that was built ontop of the Haunted Mans show building? That building is larger than Pan, Snow and Pooh put together. At the Studios the New York St fascades could easily cover upper level attractions (tho some of them would be having to boost guest over the very tall "sound stage" buildings.
And as one person noted there are plenty of "expansion" locations available in Epcot with minimal shifting of backstage facilities that are currently "temporarily" placed there.

Which leads to the next logical step -- they could go the other direction (I'm trying to avoid saying "go down") (Oh, shoot :o :) ...

VISA. It's everywhere you want to be, and a lot of places you don't.

Randy,
That's kind of how Disneyland added the Alice in Wonderland attraction. Rather than build a full-size one-floor building, they built a narrower two-level building for it. I don't know the exact ride track, but Alice may also use some of the upstairs level above Mr. Toad...

You are correct about that it was where the current Pooh's playground is.
That is just sad! :(
Big Wallaby wrote:The only real logistical problem is with space around the parks. Magic Kingdom has all sorts of stuff behind it that rule out adding on too much there, Epcot is surrounded on all sides by well-travelled roads, Studios is a little cubby carved in between World, Osceola and BVD. I guess it could expand East if they wanted to. The only park with any real space around it is AK. And that, I get the feeling, is because when they built it they weren't exactly sure what they wanted it to be.
I think DAK will be expanded and it should be. They have a lot of room to do some really great attractions and adventures in the Animal Kingdom theme. I would like to se it expand. It is a small Park right now.
