It's amazing what we do for our critters, isn't it? The $1000+ vet bill had to come out of our Disney trip budget so I didn't get to do the Segway tour, although my DH did, and we canceled Raglan Road ADRs, along with a few others.

Isn't it. We have 2 Goldens, an 11 year old and a 3 year old. Last month we had to take Emily (11) to the vet, she just was moping around the house and shivering. Well, a mortgage payment later she seemed to be better even though the vet could not figure out what was wrong. The other day, she had similar problems and back to the vet. Another mortgage payment later she was found to have the sac around her heart full of fluid, it was drained and we will have the tests Saturday.

I hope the prognosis is good. Hopefully they can use meds to keep the fluid around her heart clear. Maybe susi can enlighten us on that condition.

Aww I wish the best for you and your furry kid. I lost my rottie girl to cancer 18 months ago and it broke my heart, hopefully I will keep my boys with me a few more years

I wish the best for your girl. As I am not a Vet or licensed to give medical diagnoses, I can only offer what I have learned about in class. There are a number of things that can cause fluid in the pericardial sac, one of which is CHF. There are meds that can be used in the case of CHF depending on age and general health and other factors in the animal.

Without blood test results and other tests, there is no way of telling what it could be. Tests of the bodies functions are an extremely valuable and neccessary means to diagnosis. Without tests, Vets are sorta blind in many ways. One must know the values of all organ function and blood numbers in order to make a definite diagnosis. Never spare the tests if they need them. That is key to diagnosis and treatment!

Trauma to the area could cause a swelling and fluid build-up, not likely, but possible. And there are so many other things that can cause this too.

I am anxious to hear the Vet's diagnosis and prognosis for Emily. Please keep us posted. Sending prayers your way for poochy! :)

I love critters and will always pray for their good health and longevity! After all when I prayed for Orion after his prognosis of 2-3 months left, he made it 6months instead! I believe in the power of prayer! :)

I had a cat attack me once, all four feet and full set of teeth attached themselves to my leg. The cat had to be knocked off me with a vacuum cleaner hose (nearest weapon). Ended up with the dreaded cat scratch fever and infection in a lymph node in my groin which had to be lanced without anesthetic (that was fun :eek :) . I was lucky that a round of antibiotics cleared it up. Could have been a lot worse.

And there is yet ANOTHER disease that is caused by cats and it comes from pregnant women cleaning catboxes. That is why is why they tell pregnant women to NEVER clean the catbox. That is caused by something known as Toxoplasma gondii, AKA Toxoplasmosis. It comes from the cat poop! Cats are dirty little critters, even though they wash themselves and use a box and do not like to go in a dirty litterbox. They carry nasty cooties! That is why I garden with gloves. People who let their cats out...I have found cat poop in my planters and it is nasty and can make you sick.
Still I love cats and always will have them in my house and take good care of them so they and we dont get sick from their cooties. You just need to use commom sense when cleaning cat boxes or wash your hands after you pet the cat or dog , especially after you pet the reptiles, you don't want Salmonella. That is what reptiles and turtles can carry. Nice, huh?

That's why I love my puppydog. She doesn't bother hiding the fact that she's a nasty, dirty little shit. :p: One of my roommates sometimes gives her baths and, if I'm not watching, she'll go outside and immediately roll in the dirt to get the clean off of her! She's my baby, though. For anyone who is into pampering their puppies or kitties, I just found a neat product from Basin (the Bath stores in Downtown Disney at both WDW and DLR and there's also a store in the Grand Floridian) It's "Fluffy Pet" soap. It's all natural glycerine based soap (like all Basin soaps) and it's got a good smell. My pup and I love it, even though she hates baths. (It's pathetic, really, she'll fight to not be dragged into the shower--I usually end up just picking her up and carrying her--and then she'll just stand there as I wet her down and soap her up, all the while staring at me with those big, sad eyes like "why are you doing this to me?") I'm not sure if they have the pet soap at the stores, I ordered it online (basin.com) but it really is good stuff. Supposed to be good for pets who scratch themselves, too, because it has aloe and good stuff like that in it.
