My wife got one of me doing demolition for an addition to the house. I had fallen through the ceiling and was still hanging on to a joist.

True. The human race seems to be driving to maximize the number of future Dawin Award winners.

One thought about the railings. If the problem is the vertical parts of the rail (the stiles), attach the top of each style with a single nail or screw that is parallel to the floor, causing a hinge. Then the bottom swings free. A series of blocks placed between the bottoms keep the styles in place, and spaced properly. But when it is needed to spread them apart to un-trap someone, simply lift the adjacent spacer blocks and the offending stiles easily spread. Then when the trapped limb is removed, the blocks can be replaced and everything is right back to normal.
