A friend of mine in Ohio has 3 greys. They do seem to "break" a lot. She is always taking one or the other to a vet for something or the other. The new one is only 2 and female. I havent seen a pic of her yet but the other 2 are georgous. They want to try to get their male's sister but she is still racing.

She's house broken but if she doesn't make it outside in time, she'll mess up on the kitchen floor, but nowhere else thank goodness. Kitchen has a tile floor... I think she may have had experience with tile floors when she was a racer before she was rescued. She does yipe if someone steps on her too... and now sometimes she'll bark at something going by... Maybe she thinks someone will let her in to go rest on her bed in the living room, or one up in my mominlaw's room upstairs. She expects treats off and on when she comes in from outside, the silly dog.
PLEASE tell me Ma Barker is a greyhound,... Whew, read the last three words, thought a completely different kind of thread was about to start!! hehehe

Do they regulate the treatment of the racing dogs enough? I would think that you would want to take really good care of them if they were your income, just like horses!

I dont know much about her rescues or how the folks do things at the track, but from what my friend has told me, most of them spend the majority of the day in a crate without much interaction. The new one had some problems with an internal infection that the rescue agency kinda blew off. She is better now but my friend was ticked that they didnt take care of it prior to them adopting her.
Their male had a cut that just didnt want to heal and they are still dealing with that. Seems like they are just a delicate type breed.

There are a couple in our neighborhod, and I have seen them being walked. I said hi to them and they were telling me that the dogs were really nervious. they did make a point of telling me that they were not rescue. Hmm don't know if that was suppose to impress me or not, I would have been more impressed if they had rescued some dogs that needed it!!

HMMPPFFF. So they were puppy mill dogs instead and that is something to be proud of.? At least with the rescues you can trace their lineage.

I agree, but there are dog snobs that get them for the wrong reasons. our kids lost one of their dogs over the holiday, and they are going to wait for a while, then go to the shelter with the grandkids and get another one.

They want to get a Pug breed or something like that.

Next time you come, remind us before you get here, and we should invest in a bicycle horn for you so you can BEEP! at the people in front of you in your ECV/SUV (Susi's Unstoppable Vehicle) so you don't run us over! Teehee!
Or maybe we could design a railroad inspired "cow catcher". Most of those would also work something like a snow plow blade for inducing motion away from the front of a moving vehicle.

Whazzup wrote:Yup - couch potatoes for sure, although they don't get to climb on the furniture. I have thick beds for them on the living room floor and they are delighted to spend most of their time there - taking naps, waking up and coming over for ear scritches, taking more naps. They are clean, quiet, mellow, well housebroken, very loving and affectionate. They are sensitive dogs and not ones you'd want to leave outside (thin hair coat and not much body fat). You can't roughouse too much with them like you could a Golden Retriever or similar breed) but they do love to run and play.

Shayla is a grinner - she bares her teeth in a doggie grin when she first greets you. It looks like a snarl and has worried a few visitors, which is probably good as it may discourage bandits and trespassers.
We had a greyhound rescue on the Mainland. He was a thirty-five MPH couch potato. It took him a little while to adjust to a noisy home with three kids but he did fine. He had a couple of beds around the house but would sneak up on the family room couch occasionally.

One night our youngest woke us up in the middle of the night to complain Mac had kicked her out of bed. The big bum had snuck into her bed and pushed her off of the warm spot. When he stretched out he took the whole bed.

Mac was always friendly with everyone he'd meet. One time my wife was walking him and they were waiting at a light to cross the street. A guy came up behind them and Mac turned to greet him. He went from Mr. Happy to hackles up and a low growl in a second. My wife looked around and determined if she hadn't had Mac with her there might have been a problem. Mac, without prompting, kept himself between her and the guy until he walked off. Good guard beast!!
Whazzup wrote:It's not so much that they are fragile, as they have sensitive personalities. They can race at full speed around a track chasing an artificial rabbit, but if you happen to accidentally step on their toe or something, they YIPE! like they've been beaten or seriously hurt.

I think some racing kennels do treat their dogs like commodities. My new dog is afraid of loud noises and is very wary if you have anything in your hand, like a rake or a stick. I think she expects to be hit or punished.
My wife took Mac to obedience training. When the instructor told the owners to have the dogs sit and push on back of the legs to drop their butts Mac started to yip very loudly. The instructor said the greyhound dog handlers don't want the dogs to sit so they use cattle prods on them if they do. Rat bastards!
Whazzup wrote:Hobie - what breed is Scooter?
Scooter is a minature schnauzer. She's already proven she's a mooch too. A friend up the hill has a giant schnauzer. I'll try to get a picture of the two of them.

Thats just insane to treat dogs, or any other animals, that way. Cattle prod fer crying out loud?

It sounds like he picked up on the situation when he was growling at the stranger. that is a good dog!
