Ignorance to the Nth degree

Post by ShootinHippos » Mon Dec 31, 2007 8:16 pm

I've dealt with some stupid guests in my time, but this takes the cake:

So I'm doing guest control for the fireworks, happily waving my flashlight and directing guests down the line, when a young family (wife, husband, and small child) wave me over.

They seemed hesitant to talk to me, so I told them that if I could help them I'd be more than happy to. The husband looked around, leaned in and said, "Um, there is a couple of an... alternative lifestyle kissing over there. There are families everywhere and it's disgusting." I politely told them that Disney has an anti-hate, anti-discrimination policy and as long as they're just kissing I wasn't going to stop them.

He looked at me incredulously and said, "So you're not going to do anything?!"

I reminded him that Disneyland welcomes all couples and families into the park, gay or straight. The husband started to yell at me again when his wife stopped him and loudly said, "Forget it. Disneyland is run by fags."

I shot them a dirty look, told them to have a magical evening, and hightailed it out of there.

How can someone be so hateful, and on top of that so ignorant enough to assume that everyone else around them shares their bigotry?!

Perhaps they made a mistake in flagging down the local gay-rights activist to bitch to.

I have to admit I don't care to see gay or lesbian couples kissing, but I feel I am fair in that because I don't really want to watch straight couples kissing either. At Disney World and Disneyland, I don't care to see PDA beyond hand-holding from anyone, gay, straight or otherwise. In my mind, it's not the place for that except in the Wedding Pavillion (where it's invited guests and people working the event), in ones' room, or away from other guests where it's not out there for everyone to see. Shoot, if you want to do it behind some place that you find romantic, more power to you, but take it a bit off the beaten path.

At work, there is one couple of two guys who spend a lot of time in personal contact, but they don't do anything offensive. Heck, if they pecked kisses once in a while, I wouldn't find it offensive. Not something I want to watch, but I have the choice in the matter. OTOH, there is a straight couple who, every time one of them breathes, they have to kiss. And they don't care who's around to witness it. They kiss, they come up for air, one of them says something and it's time to snog again.

My rule of thumb is that whether you're gay or straight, save it for your own time. Don't do things out in public that give me little room for doubt as to what you'll be doing when you get home.

I am all for equal rights for all people who meet the minimum age requirement, no matter what their situation or lifestyle. No side should have superior rights in my mind.

That from a political/social conservative. See? We're not all nutjobs. Okay, so I am a right-wing nutjob, but I do believe that a true right-wing nutjob holds the view that conservatism means you allow all to live as they choose and you should never force your views on others, and I see both sides of the aisle doing that all the freaking time. Sure, I have my Christian views, and it is my job to live by them and tell you about them if you ask, but to beat it down your throat is just stupid. To do that would make me as oppressive as the people who owned slaves and justified it by saying that people of a different skin color were less human, justifying that by an ancient curse on one of Noah's sons and his descendants and by saying that he was the darkest-skinned of his siblings. While I do believe that that curse was real and I do believe he was one of three fathers of the entire population, I have seen absolutely no evidence that his skin color was a factor. And yes, I've been in churches where they taught that in Sunday School.

Wow, I really went off. Sorry about that.

With BRWombat visiting WDW and fairly incommunicado, that means I get to do this:

Welcome to :sgt: from :wombat: and :wallaby: !

Wait a second... Has that purple flag always been in my right hand? How did I not notice? What am I, the tour guide from Flights of Wonder? Can I be?

And ShootinHippos, I am really curious where your name comes from. Are you ever a JC skipper?

Make sure you keep returning and posting stories!

You're not a right wing nut job (well...I'm gonna forget about your views on guns right now so I can revel in agreeing with you! ;) ) You're an old-school conservative. I agree with most of what conservatives used to believe: smaller government, lower taxes. The right wing nut jobs now just want a government small enough to fit in your bedroom...

I've got a lot of love for you bother Wallaby, and I agree, people of all orientations should get a freakin' room (or many rooms...don't want them to feel crowded! :p :) . In the meantime, though, since it's not against the rules, you're a good person, Hippo Sniper or whatever your name is... :D: Seriously, though: welcome Shootin' Hippos. I hope that you enjoy your stay here.

In other news: I've figured out exactly what kind of liberal I am. All I want is your guns, your gas-guzzling cars and a reasonable amount of your money. In return, I'm promising you liberty, safety, education, and health care! I swear I can do it. Ask me how!

Edited to add: I'm just loving the "Hippo Sniper" imagery. Maybe it's because I'm about one shot of rum away from finishing out my own personal new year's party with my roommates, but I'm envisioning a tactical squad of guys dressed in black with high powered rifles and ear pieces boarding the Queen of the Congo...

A good sniper would never take the easy way in. He'd be wearing his Gilly suit and spend three days crawling through the worst part of the jungle to get to his target.

That won't work at WDW. They took out the subs and replaced them with Pooh's playground. :D:
