Because the amount of jobs versus the amount of people looking for work is such that there are WAY to many people looking for work, and the pay in Mexico is so low, that even below minimum wage in the U.S. is better than top wage in Mexico. Sad but true! Also those "skilled" construction workers pay a preimum to bid on the jobs!

From first hand observations on the trip, there is plenty of work and not enough people to do it. Wages are lower because the cost of living is lower.

The manufacturing sector along the border is also growing by leaps and bounds. Locals get training so they can do the job.

Mexico needs to deflate the myth of all the money is in the US.

Here's a follow-up. Apparently the US isn't as attractive as it once was.

BW - keep us informed on how your friend is doing. Hope he recovers quickly and has no lasting disability from his "accident."

That Sucks! Hope your friend is feeling better..
Here in Texas people have to watch out for Dallas Cowboys getting drunk and crashing...
One hit and killed a man who stopped to help someone else on the shoulder of the road. He is now in jail..

Friend is doing better. He went back to work yesterday, but right now times are tough since he's been out of work two weeks. We, his family and his wife's family are helping as we can.

Part of the frustration for said friend and his wife right now is the understanding that the guy that hit him will never be caught. He gets off completely free while my friend has to take a month or more to fully recover.

Grr.

I don't understand why they can't put out a warrant for this guy (If there's surveillance video, they've got a vehicle description and a partial liscense plate, right?). If he's a crappy enough driver, he'll run into something else, or at least get pulled over...

In a lot of places there are problems with illegals crashing into people, destroying a citizen's car and leaving the citizen with no way to pay for it (hard for an illegal to get insurance). It happened to a friend of mine in Montana, but luckily in that case, no one was hurt. Sure sucks. There really does need to be immigration reform, but I doubt there'll be anything meaningful happening on that subject any time soon. It wouldn't hurt to call your house rep and senators about it,though. (At least, it might make your friend feel better to make absolutely clear how F'd up the situation is to somebody who's job it is to do something about it.)

The Capitol Switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. Their job is to connect you to anybody in congress you want to have words with. If you don't know who you're looking for, go to http://www.congress.org There's an easy to use search function that'll let you put in your address and it'll show you names and even pictures of the people who work for you.

I'm sorry for the whole situation. I don't know what to say. I'm just not as eloquent as I like to think I am. The situation just sucks. :(

Well, that's as eloquent as you need to be, my friend.
