Nothing But Nets

Post by hobie16 » Fri Dec 14, 2007 10:16 pm

I bought a book by Rick Reilly, a Sports Illustrated columist, that was a compilation of his best columns. Rick writes about topics that aren't normally found in a sports rag. One of the stories was about malaria in Africa. It kills about one person every thirty seconds. It's probably the number one killer of children.

Rick discovered a simple preventive method. The use of a insecticide-treated bed net. They cost $10.

Rather than go over all the details, please take a look at:

If you've got a spare 10 bucks you can help a family stay alive.

Cool, Hobie! I've not read through it all yet, but it sounds like a good cause. My sister had (has, I guess...as I understand it, you never really get rid of it) malaria. Not a pretty sight when they finally shipped her back to the states...and that was when she was "well enough to travel!"

Quick random note about that tea he mentions in the nothing but nets article: it's called gun powder because of its shape. The tea leaves are rolled and become tiny little balls. White people saw it and thought it looked like gun powder. It's neat to watch them "explode" into full tea leaves in your cup! And it tastes good too. So, I recommend that after everybody donates a little cash to the worthy cause of malaria prevention, you all should then go to http://www.teavana.com and treat yourself to some gunpowder tea! Then you can relax with a nice cup of tea feeling good about that you've helped save a child's life! :D:

Now, why can't more do-gooders figure out something like that? It's easy, simple, cheap and does a heck of a lot of good. Good find, hobie.

Exercise your credit card. I'm in for $100.

Can't do a full $100 right now, but I can see myself doing this as I can over the long term.
