I have to say I understand both sides of the MAC/PC argument. I have these discussions with my brother-in-law all the time - he's an IT guy for one of the local school districts and is a MAC disciple. Being out in the working world for so many years, I know the majority of businesses run PC's, using a Windows platform. And yah, it's that damn Microsoft codewriting that allows for the stupid bugs to get into your system. Another gal in one of my classes got her at-home hard drive fried the same weekend mine did, also by accessing the CSULB e-mail.
On the other hand, as an art major, I've gotten really interested in applications that can be done with programs like photoshop in digital collage, and all those visual programs seem to work much better on MACs. I've tried layering on my own pc, and it fights me for temporary memory every step of the way. I have friends who are professional graphics designers who do work on MAC platforms and they don't have these kinds of problems.
As it is, my pc is 7 years old, and for peripherals, I need parallel port cables, so buying a new printer (which I need anyway) would be useless at this point. I've got a borrowed laptop which I am loving just in terms of the convenience of having more work surface around me. Even with an academic discount, the MAC is about twice as expensive as a good brand pc. However, my b-i-l being the pal that he is is willing to let me borrow all his artistic MAC softwear (as he's only loaded it on one computer at home, so it's legal to load it on a second family computer) so I can get the newer Adobe stuff without going into further debt. Oh yeah, he's also willing to loan me his Office for MAC software so I don't have to learn a whole new way of doing word processing (as if it wasn't enough to learn Word after already knowing how to do WP from a DOS set up on Wangs - ancient history - along with Word Perfect in the old days as well) It's just really aggrevating at this point. Everyone is saying that it's going to cost more to repair my current PC than it's worth and that I may as well buy something new. Gee, if I go for a PC platform, then I can get a digital camera as well as a photo printer and better scanner (I haven't heard good things about the all in one's, as if one application goes out, the whole thing is useless). If I get a MAC, I've got a whole raftload of free software available to me...decisions, decisions.
And how is everyone's spring break going????.....
