Just when you think you've heard it all..

I would like to get into announcing... listening to some of my spieling I think I could be good at it. I don't think I want to get into radio anymore, though. I don't think I have a quick enough wit for what I would want to do, and I understand breaking into the business is a bit on the tough side.

I did college radio for a year. I did okay with it, but I can't ad lib worth anything. Give me a script and put me on stage and I can/will do just about anything, but I'm just not that good at improvising.

Randy...You are another *radio person*? I worked almost 20 yrs in the radio announcing biz, one of the other threads here has all the info. I *was* going to share some stories about my tete a tetes with some of the well known rock stars of the 1970's but I don't know if it is proper to kiss and tell. ;) How long have you worked in the broadcasting field? And you are right. some of the calls a station gets in the middle of the night are priceless! I worked all shifts throughout my career, all nighters on Fri and Sat were the weirdest! Lots of drunks and meth freaks up all night...Whew......Some strange memories of those shifts.

I kinda got into this by default. I had a job where I set my own hours (shooting a training film for the local power station). I tended to begin my day at noon due to always being up late every night (not a partier, just a night owl). So as I was coming to the end of my film my boss had coffee with a radio station engineer who was complaining that he was about to begin an all night service and needed to find someone who he could be sure would remain awake all night. So my film project boss sent me to the radio station. I knew where it was because my father had retired from that station 8 years prior (asst chief engineer). So I walk in and find that just by showing up I got the job. Didn't hurt that my new boss was hired by my father a few decades earlier. :D:

So I have now been working the 9pm to 5am shift for 20 years. And with my weekend being mon-tue I tend to have no life (other than the one I have here on line).

BTW I have had a very varied work record. I have done everything from movie theatre general employee (ticket sales, taker, concessions, popcorn popper, etc), to head of quality control of a robot factory, to flower delivery, to office machine repairman. I even had a summer job installing a closed ciruit TV studio which I was supposed to take 6 months doing and I completed in 2 days. I spent the rest of the time learning how to get the most from the equipment (and learn how to use it). :)

Not all that tough. I know we are looking for someone right now. But you will be starting at the bottom, part time, at about minimum wage and if you survive a year or so you can move up to a producer position (at just slightly above minimum wage).

I may have posted this before, but an older woman once in Critter Country asked why the shop was changed from last time. When I told her I didn't know the old layout, she insisted that I did - that I knew what she was talking about and was deliberately not helping her and that I was VIOLATING HER CIVIL RIGHTS. How's that for crazy? Another cast member tried to help him and she started in with the same dialog. I think he should have reported her as being racist as she was saying some slurs to him. Woulda been worth it to put management in that predicament - agree with the insane guest and be put on record as supporting racism, or back up the cast member and oppose racism but be singled out as not helping a guest?
