The Days That Fire Burned the Sky
I just wanted to say that I hope everyone in Southern California is safe tonight with all the fires that are currently burning. Just being a meteorologist and following stories like this make my heart cringe knowing that conditions aren't going to be getting better for at least the next couple days.
Something that even caught me by surprise was seeing this article about the National Weather Service forecasting office having to be evacuated and the forecasters either sent to other offices or rushing home.

We are okay so far, but praying! :rosary: We seem to go hour by hour around here. Nothing is normal & I'm very alert. We always have 2 family members watching the rancho. Rancho is in the Santiago fire rim abt 3 miles below Holy Sepulcher Cem. All horses & dogs were taken to my brother's rancho Sat. Now we are hoping he will be safe! Santiago fire was not set, or so we have been told. Lights have been flickering a bit lately. Not a very calming factor. For two nights the 1 - 5 has been absolutely packed with people evacuating San Diego. Those freeway emergency signs had a number to call for any in need of shelter. Have never seen this. All seems so unreal. Breathing at DLR is almost impossible! Walking too!! I almost dreaded my breaks as we all come back covered in ash & chocking. A pin cart by Coke Corner fell over on a CM Sun. Another CM cought her arm in a pin cart rope. Have no idea why those things were even open. I wish everyone safety. Let this horror end soon!!

We are ok so far, but packed up and ready to leave if need be. There was a house within our view on fire when I went to work yesterday, and the road I take to work was blocked off just past where I needed to turn, another large fire there, but the wind was blowing the other way. My sister-in-law had a reporter parked in front of her home, so I was able to see exactly when she and family needed to evacuate on the channel 7 news. The Fire was successfully diverted away, but came very close.
California is going to need a long time to recover from all this, and we have a couple more days of high winds. I hope all who read this, their family and friends will be safe.

F!Dan, you were correct. O C Fire Fighters down by our gates just told my brother the Santiago Fire was arson. :mad:DLRFantasmic!Dan wrote:I heard someone started the fire.

I am praying for everyone in the fires' paths. They say California is on fire from Malibu to the Mexican border with so many fires. I cry just watching California burn. It is where I was born, Van Nuys Calif. And it will always remain my home, no matter where we are. My prayers are going out every second for all of you!
We pray for a quick end to the horrendous Santa Ana winds and heat. And GOD Bless the firefighters and National Guard there!
I just heard the report here that they are expecting fiercer winds and hotter temps in SoCal today. I cannot believe it. I will continue to pray for the weather to change there.

When I flew out yesterday morning there were fires all over the place. At least 3-4 you could see when we took off. Holy Cow. Sunday I had gone back to get my jacket (and have a beer. Hey I was multi-tasking),the news was all about Malibu. Then it got worse. I'll keep my fingers crossed for eveyone. This sucks! :(

Since this is the closest fire to the DLR..
here's the most current "official" statement from the Orange County Fire Authority..
OCFA Santiago Canyon Info
I'm off for the next two days, so at least I can be home and clean my house of all the ash and dust that has come in my windows. There is a layer of dust and ash on every flat surface in my home and it's annoying as hell. I can live with it most of the time, but I've kept my bedroom closed and the air conditioner on in there, as the AC unit has a hepa filter in it.. Everything I touch in my house has a layer of grit on it, and no matter what you do, you can't seem to feel clean, if you catch what I'm saying.
Sunday and Monday at the park were horrendous. Leaves, branches falling from the trees, the bamboo trees in Frontierland were creaking, and I swore at least one of them was going to come crashing down because they were bending so far. The banners that hang from the "streetlights" in the esplanade were shredded at the bottoms and flapping in the breeze. Backstage where I leave my building to use the restroom, go on break, etc., was covered in leaves and branches and if I had a broom, I would have swept it up cause it was hazardous for walking. I had to call custodial to come and clean it up, and I know they had better things to be doing than worry about the CM's that walk backstage.
And then you have the SG's...
"Are you open? Legoland is closed, and we got evacuated, so we figured we'd come and spend the day at DL if you are open.. "
What I wished we had all day on the phones was a list of the attractions that was closed due to the weater. You figure Ca Screamin would be closed, etc, but not once did we get any type of list that we could tell a guest about as to what weather related closures we had. We all knew there would be no Fantasmic/Fireworks on Sunday, but then you get the SG's that hope that other people will cancel their reservations for Fantasmic so that they can get in... UGH!!!!!!
