I remember it because there was this moron at the church I went too then that talked about it. He couldn't believe I would take my family too such a place. If I'm not mistaken, the main reason for the boycott was because Disney was offering insurance to any same sex partners of its employees.
That plus the Miramax films. The irony was that the SBC boycott was actually started by a group called the American Family Association, which is somewhat like the Westboro group in that they pick on other people's rights to forward their own narrow thinking. I worked at a book store, and the AFA was boycotting NOT the bookstore, but it's parent company, because the bookstore sold a couple of readily available titles. The parent company didn't sell books and generally had no idea why they were being boycotted and picketted. I then began working for Disney and got to put up with them there because we supposedly had purposfully put vulgur things into the videotapes of our movies (the whole Aladdin whispering controversy and the like). The boycott was urged in earnest when Miramax was bought and the same sex benefits package went into effect.

exactly where I was trying to go with it... I just don't see Tiki room detracting from anyones faith unless they had weak faith to begin with... and if your faith is that weak, and you care about how strong your faith is, you should be spending your vacation elsewhere at bible camp or on a church sponsored mission and not at WDW lol.

Churchy, I understand what you were saying in response to my post. I think you have the right idea, you can use rides like this as lessons to others that are with you if you want... teach them the commandments, tell them that the tiki gods would represent something that you are not supposed to worship as a false god, etc... it would be hard not to laugh at the show, but it can be entertaining and religiously educational with the right teacher I think...

however, I think if we are looking at it from the perspective of those devout jews you spoke of - I just don't think they could step inside WDW without being offended if they don't like automatic lights :P

TO me - and I am very strong spiritually, and I am a firm believer that you don't need a physical church to be a Christian, - To me i can not ponder why any sort of entertainment could offend ones beliefs. Some stuff is in bad taste, but i think everyone has to experience the bad stuff so they know just how good their own spiritual strengths are. If we can not throw around other ideas then how do we know that we are not being manipulated by others who guide us in these thoughts?

In that case, it's not a matter of weak faith, but rather the desire to stay so far away from what is against the commandments they live by that they don't start down the slippery path. For instance, if it's easier to walk down the sidewalk so as to not trip the lights, it's also really easy to just flip that switch and turn on the lights, and so on. So it's not a matter of weak faith, but rather the desire to flee from sin and stay as far from it as possible. To disrespect that way of thinking is, to me, reprehensible. It must also be understood that the only time the Torah says not to work is during the hours of the Sabbath, which is a time, by design, of rest and relaxation. It is not just for the religious observances, but also for one's own health and quality of life. Everyone needs a day off, once a week.

I find it interesting that Phelps, on that video that Churchy posted, at the end is claiming that Jesus died for her sin. Now, if that was to personalize it and say she comes from a life of sin and struggles daily to live righteously, that would be one thing. But instead, she is using it to be exclusive, that Jesus died for my sins, not yours. Were she saying that to me and I was on the fence, she would have pushed me away with the knowledge that I was screwed, so I'd better find something else. If she had worded it that He died for my sins because of the decision I've made, and I hope that you'll make that decision too to make it so He died for yours too, that would be one thing. But her stance is that the host of the show that is interviewing them is screwed, in that show it sounds like he's made up his mind and it's too late for him to change his mind, and she doesn't care to even give it a try.

Talk about a person who uses Christianity to be bitter.

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

It was in the newspaper and the article was about devout jews. They do not hate automatic lights. It is just that on the Holy Day aka Sabbath they are not to work and that includes turning on lights. In that neighborhood there are lots of security features including motion detector type of lights that come on when a person walks by. If these few devout Jews walk on the sidewalk then they could turn on a light by accident.

Phelp is like most religous people but he took the abomination of homosexuality way too far and now thinks every bad thing in life is proof that his version of a god is punishing the world for condoning homosexuality. Plane crashes, bridge collapses, rape, murder, dog fighting, war, accidents, floods, famines, and aids are all because of the condoning of homosexuality.

God said it is a sin but it is an individual sin. I am too cold and tired to explain was an arse Phelps is.

I worked as guest service manager in a hotel in south florida. We had a very devoutly jewish client base, and catered to that group among others. During one of the religious holidays, we had a large orthidox group that would come stay at the hotel. During that time, we had extra staff on duty to open the room doors for them, since they were the card key locks and they couldn't use their keys to get in. There were some really odd requests during that time. They would check in and pick a favorite tv station. Then, the housekeepers were explicitely forbidden to touch the tvs in the rooms. Why? The guests couldn't change the channels or turn the tv on or off, but nothing stopped them from watching. They couldn't turn lights on or off, so they would set the lights the way they wanted them, and then come to the front desk to get someone to turn them off for them for the night. The rabbi's son rode the elevator up and down the whole weekend. He got in whenever anyone else did since he couldn't push buttons. He actually rode the elevator up with just about every bellman. We'd see the bellman rolling the birdcages full of luggage past the desk with the rabbi's kid riding on top.

They were a difficult group, and not always a fun challenge. The kids were unruly, and we had other groups complaining constantly because the kids were bored so they would run around the outside of the hotel and throw rocks at the room windows, or would play in the ashtrays like sandboxes. We also had a kid get severely injured and we had to call 911 against the rabbi's requests to cover our own butts. It was the kid's fault (he was playing on a door, swinging on it, and got his hand caught in the hinged side, probably breaking his fingers) but we didn't need a lawsuit. I ended up owning a scooter, two skateboards, a baseball and bat, and several other items that I took away from various kids in the group because I had told them numerous times to stop using them in the lobby. The rabbi himself was very nice, but his son was one of the gang leaders and instigated most of the misbehavior. It was an odd experience!
