After coming on here and finding no posts for the last few days, I was greatly relieved to come here and see a few posts. I miss you guys--and gals--too much. We used to have such an active forum here. Curse you, Facebook!

A couple weeks ago, I was here in the library, and a guy came up to the reference librarian and said another guy appeared to be unwell. So the librarian called 911--so discreetly I didn't even know it. Well, next thing you know, the paramedics are coming up on the elevator, and checking him out. Then cops show up; they begin checking him out as well. Again, very discreet. Then I hear, "Sir , what's that white powder on the table in front of you?" BUSTED! Had warrants as well. Stupid library patron trick #2!

Ha! That'll teach him to find someplace more private to do drugs -- like a bus station or a restaurant. :oweye:

One of our roomies was on methadone for 20 years; she's been disruptive to our household and will have to go. Especially since yesterday one of my other roomies found her stash of heroin and needles in her towel, despite her claims of going to recovery two days a week.

Zuzu Angel’s 94th Birthday

Image

Say "Brazilian fashion" and you'll be sure to hear Zuzu Angel's name. The designer's collections brought the bold spirit and vibrant colors of her native country to American runways in the early Seventies. Assertive in both her work and her personal life, this "seamstress" (as she described herself) is remembered for her courage through the political turmoil of the period.

Abu al-Wafa' al-Buzjani’s 1075th Birthday

Image

You have to do something pretty great to get a moon crater named after you.

If Persian mathematician Abu al-Wafa’ al-Buzjani were alive today, he’d be 1075 years old. It’s startling, then, to consider the importance of his work, conceived of and produced so many years ago.

Today’s doodle honors this man, an innovator whose contributions to science include one of the first known introductions to negative numbers, and the development of the first quadrant, a tool used by astronomers to examine the sky. His pioneering work in spherical trigonometry was hugely influential for both mathematics and astronomy.

In our innovative society, we don’t always stop to reflect on the historical figures whose work makes our own advances possible. Abu al-Wafa’s legacy demonstrates the monumental importance of some of history’s lesser known scientists. His picture may not be pinned to the wall in elementary school classrooms, but it’s now pinned to the homepage of Google. Happy 1075th, Abu al-Wafa al-Buzjani!

800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta

Image

It’s 1215 in Runnymede, England. On the banks of the River Thames, King John sits nervously with a group of powerful barons. The mood at the negotiation table is tense, and the country teeters on the precipice of civil war. It’s no wonder the barons are hot under the collar--for years, the despotic King John has been doling out prison sentences with impunity, and the barons have descended upon him to demand their rights be recognized.

The ensuing negotiations would result in the sealing of the Magna Carta. For the first time, a monarch entered a written contract that limited his power and made him answerable to his subjects. This was a profound idea, and one that would inspire political thinkers in some of history’s most pivotal moments.

Despite its significance as a symbol of democracy, little of the original agreement dealt with liberty or universal freedom, and most of it was eventually changed or cut. When the dust of antiquity settled, however, what remained was one of its most important contributions: the right to due process. Protection against illegal imprisonment was one of the cornerstones of this agreement. Doodler Matt Cruickshank has captured a cartoon interpretation of the scene with today’s doodle as post-sealing an unjustly detained baron finds an unlikely ally in the King’s knight and scurries to freedom.
