Dead at 95. Who will skipper McHale's Navy now?

I don't know if that's the biggest question.

Like many my age, my first introduction to Borgnine's work was on that silly comedy. As I chanced across the serious acting work he did before and since, I grew ever more sorry that he felt the need to associate himself with the show. The man had some serious acting chops, and the show didn't come close to challenging him.

Then again, actors say the best roles are the ones that last for years and pay the rent, so I can't hold it against him.

He had a bunch of very good roles.

From Here to Eternity
Marty - Oscar winner
The Vikings
McHale's Navy
The Flight of the Phoenix
The Dirty Dozen
The Wild Bunch
The Poseidon Adventure
Escape from New York
Airwolf
SpongeBob SquarePants

There's a lot more.

I, too, first came to know of Ernest Borgnine on McHale's Navy. That just made me keep my eye out for him in other things. Actually, Zazu, you might not give enough credit to McHale's Navy. In interviews with people who have done both comedy and drama, when asked which is harder, they usually choose comedy. It must take a lot to keep a silly premise going for a long time.

RIP

When I saw it on the news the other day, I was surprised to learn it was Borgnine, not Clark Gable, that drove Scarlett O'Hara to safety from the burning of Atlanta.

I remember seeing him in 'from here to eternity" when I was younger. he was not a nice guy in that film!

years later, when I saw him as Mchale, it took a while to get use to him being in a comedy!

I've seen most of those. :D No real plans on ever seeing From Here to Eternity but, boy, do I want to see Marty! Hubby wants to see The Flight of the Phoenix again, but every time he suggests it I'm all, "but Borgnine's character makes me cry." :p The scripts he worked with were not always stunner (I'm talking Airwolf, not McHale's Navy, though), but his work was always excellent. He'll be missed. :(

When I was getting my associate's in broadcasting, journalism minor, we watched Marty in one of our classes. But somebody else played the title role, not Borgnine.
