Apparantly not everyone understands that putting water on a grease fire is bad

Post by Shorty82 » Thu Jul 12, 2012 6:59 pm

Turkeyham texted me earlier, it seems that on Monday evening there was a fire in her condo building. Nine units were destroyed, seventy-five have smoke damage. She and her cat are fine but can't move back in until everything is cleaned. The cause of the fire was someone trying to put out grease fire with water! I know I was taught basic fire safety as a little kid and one of the things they taught is to never, ever, ever use water on grease fires, that it will just spread the fire. Guess not everyone learned that basic fire fact as a kid. She asked that I post it so I guess she won't be on much, if at all, until she moves back into her condo.

Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long.

We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious…
and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

That's terrible. I hope she and her cat can get back in their home quickly. I'm thinking good thoughts for her.

Not pointing fingers, but did anyone see Lasolimu in the area?

What often happens in cases like this is, they can only think of using water to put out a fire. It just doesn't register in the panic of the moment to use a dry chemical extinguisher, or baking soda, or put a large lid over the flames to smother them.

I've always been grateful my little sister had the presence of mind to put a lid on the pan when she got some bacon going and then wandered off and forgot about it -- until the smoke reminded her. But of course we grew up on Emergency!, so she'd been drilled on it a bit. ;)
