Maurice Sendak will not be down for breakfast

The creator of "Where the Wild Things Are" has died at age 83.

He has touched many, many children (and adults).

I was absolutely transfixed (and scared) at the exotic monsters when I was a child!
Sadly, I left the book outside one day and it rained....AND it was from the Library!

I was never much of a Where the Wild Things Are fan - liked the art, but the story didn't work for me. But Chicken Soup with Rice, and Pierre (A Cautionary Tale), and his illos for Little Bear and What Do You Say, Dear? -- perfection. And as someone who has sat through entirely too many performances of Nutcracker (I am not a ballet fan, but middle daughter performs in it every year, soooo...), I loved the costumes he did for Pacific Northwest Ballet - so original!

He'll be missed. :(

I'd never heard of "What Do You Say, Dear?" before, but I liked all his other works--I grew up on Little Bear--but I thought "In The Night Kitchen"--though it features a naked little boy--was genius. The Night Kitchen chefs look like Oliver Hardy. But making an airplane out of dough to bring milk to the chefs was incredible. And I remember when "Really Rosie and the Nutshell Kids" was on TV, and included Pierre. I enjoyed that so much.
