Heading West again...

Post by ktulu » Fri Aug 24, 2007 8:53 pm

Yes, I am heading west again, but I'm taking a more northern route and not stopping until I get to Tokyo. Work is sending me there for a conference in which I am doing a presentation. I'll be there for 5 days, with some free time.

So, the question is, do I piss off my wife and visit Tokyo Disneyland or Disneysea?

Not being your wife, I would say "go, and take me"..but if i were your wife, I'd cut off your testicles if you went to DLT without me.

I'm just sayin.......

Last time I checked a flight from DFW to NRT was about $1600, I'd need two more. I don't have that kind of coin laying around.

I may go and shop at Boy Voyage and Ikspiari though, for souvenirs!

Stay at the Park Hyatt. Very cool place. It's where Lost In Translation was shot.

Ah, it is in Shinjuku too! My bosses boss already booked our hotel. The Park Hyatt is twice what we're paying. Bosses boss will also be my translator during my presentation. I know enough Japanese to ask a question and get a response in Japanese that I won't understand, unless it is "eigo o hanashimasu ka?"

If I get a chance I'll go by and check it out.

If you haven't mastered chop sticks learn fast. Asians are very impressed with anglos that can use the sticks.

Learn the business card ceremony. It is VERY important. Huge insult if it's not done right.

I am a master of chop sticks. We love Asian food, especially sushi.

Ah yes, the ever so important business card ceremony. "Watashi no meishi. Dozo." Take with two hands, do not place in wallet or just stick into back pocket. Actually, being a westerner they won't expect too much out of me. It's just polite if I do it correctly. I plan on bringing a business card holder to put all of the cards I collect and keep in my backpack as to avoid the "where do I put this" scenario. It's fun when we have a large group in Dallas. They are usually really nervous. It's also fun to maintain eye contact and watch them dart their eyes around the room.

Working where I do, I've had some guests from Japan... It cracks them up when I air my limited Japanese and say "Kappamaki oishi"

I tell them Ohio, or Konnichiwa or Konbanwa depending on the time of day, and I bow deeply, like they're really royal Heh.(Good Morning, Good Day, Good Evening- in that order) I also thank them in Japanese too, and say 'You're welcome' in Japanese as well.
