Disneyland as it was in 1957

At the old Disney Hyperion Studio, the screening room where animators would show animated scenes to Walt for his approval was small, with no ventilation or AC. Not only was it hot, but the animators were nervously awaiting Walt's reaction to their work. Thus, the room became known as the Sweatbox. Even after the Studio moved to Burbank and elegant screening rooms were offered to the staff, the moniker remained.
Now SGT has a sweatbox of our own. This is the place to find and post all entertaining topics such as video links, jokes, games, and the like. A general rule of thumb is that if the thread is meant to be informative (interesting news stories for example), or a topic for discussion (like setting up a park meet) then it should go in the Break Room, but if the intent is to entertain the masses then it's home is The Sweatbox. I'm sure there will be grey areas at times, so if you have doubt as to where a new thread should go, just use your best judgement and the SGT Staff will be glad to move it later if you guessed wrong.

Very nice. Captured the character of the park, and its guests and Cast.
My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

Beautiful! Too bad I didn't have my headset with me; I would've liked to have heard what "Aunt Jemima" was chatting with the guest about. Can you imagine where the cast and guests are now, and if they remember their trip--especially the kids? Okay, I know a lot of them are dead, but hey, the kids should remember, right? I was only a year old and living in Massachusetts when this was taken. But it was very well done.

That would have been something I know I'd have enjoyed if I'd been around then. If I ever build a time machine, I know where I'm going first!

No sound on this film...just music in the background. She was probably talking about pancakes. Just a guess! :)felinefan wrote:Beautiful! I noticed that (gasp!) here in the time of Walt Disneys actual presence...there were many lights out. The parks were already starting to go to hell in a hand basket. :holmes:

Re: Disneyland as it was in 1957
We were there in 1956 when I was a little tyke. We had my Dad's old home movies of DL transferred to VHS and now I need to copy them to DVD. I remember riding in the conestoga wagon and the driver let my little brother John sit in front with him and called him a mule skinner, which became his nickname for awhile. A few other memories: The rockets scared me to death because they went really high, really fast, and tilted enough that I thought I was going to fall out. I haven't ridden them since.
I loved the Skyway ride where you could see out over Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. It was so hot inside the Mike Fink Keelboats that I really wanted to jump out into the river, and that was over Christmas holidays. I can't imagine how miserable it must have been inside the boats during summer.
It was that first visit to DL that sparked my love for Disney, although I didn't get to return to the park until 1980, then to WDW in 1981 while it was still under construction. Started visiting regularly in 1999 and it's been at least annually ever since.
Thanks for posting that link - it really renewed some memories of the Happiest Place on Earth.

What really surprised me the most were the guest. They came so dressed up. Now when I see a woman in dress at the park I think its just bizarre. If i saw a man in a tie then I would assume he worked at the park as a manager.
