SG-ish Reactions

Post by seeing_eye_child » Wed Dec 21, 2011 5:49 pm

Disney and SGTs dropped off my radar for a few months after I got back from my summer trip, but now I'm in full planning mode again....and already faced with SG-ish attitude.

Complaint mode activated! :soap:

So my fiance (SQUEEEE!) and I are planning our WDW honeymoon. :lovers:

The fact that this is a Disneymoon is causing me to trip over some responses and comments that aren't technically SGT's, but are judgmental and bothersome, nonetheless.

APPARENTLY, you seec adults aren't supposed to do Disney unless they have kids. That's the rule.

In the early honeymoon planning days, I researched several cruise lines, including DCL. I bumped across a few trip reports on non-Disney sites like cruise critic that were critical of adults traveling without kids. One went so far as to call us childless Disney fans "obsessive, weird, and creepy."

I frequent a Board X generally populated with reasonable Disney fans, with and without children, and with a wicked sense of humor...not unlike here. SG's are nearly unheard of there. So when we decided on WDW, I thought, "They'll be happy for me and non-judgmental when I announce my Disneymoon plans." And they were....

...except for this ONE guy who said "personally, I don't understand all these pre-baby Disney vacations." OK, fine, not your thing, I get it. Except no, the ensuing comments made it clear he meant, "I judge and refuse to understand anyone who goes to WDW without kids."

As long as I'm not 1. Interfering with your vacation 2. Interfering with your child's vacation or 3. A child molester/pervert......What the hell does it matter to you if I'm going to WDW without kids? Why do you feel the need to tell me that this kind of vacation makes no sense to you? Unless you're actually asking me for an explanation, what you are doing is passing judgment on me....for my choice of VACATION. Really? Really?! :pissed:

There's this attitude among adults that I keep bumping across that basically says "Unless you've reached X point in your life, you're not a person." I've been at parties where I wasn't allowed in the conversation because I wasn't a parent. Single people get singled out because they "lack" a significant other all the time. And now I can't take the vacation I want without judgement because I'm not a parent.

GAH!

We started our honeymoon camping in San Diego, even brought our bowling balls with us.

Screw 'em! The last trip to DLR was with our youngest who was 15 at the time. She had a friend locally so they went off to do their thing while we old gas passers went our way. We had a great time, did what we wanted to do while getting together with our daughter for meals and the walk back to the hotel when the park closed. It was a lovely three days.

Echoing all these sentiments, do what you want to do. Similar to Darph, we camped our way down Rt. 66 from Chicago to LA (more than 2000 miles all the way) and went to Disneyland and Universal before hitting San Francisco, Yosemite, and Yellowstone on the way back. I'm hoping to do our 35 anniversary on the Fantasy (without kids).

Go. Live your dream. (/Tangled)

It is one of the questions of the ages. Another one is, "Why do you care if I'm going to WDW again?" Do people who go to the beach/hunting/shopping/etc. every year get this grief? In my experience, no, and that it's people who do those kinds of things who're most prone to the "WDW without kids? What's wrong with you?" It's my belief that they can't cope with the reality that people in the world don't find their lifestyle fascinating and therefore I ignore them because they're clearly brain dead (it isn't the vacation preference that makes them brain dead -- it's their inability to imagine someone else enjoying something else).

We've gone to Orlando twice without going to any of the WDW parks (except for a partial day that was just middle daughter and I doing the Give a Day thing), but that's because the kids were not interested and I decided not to go by myself. Next time out, they are going whether they want to or not! Although I will probably abandon them at the park entrance and go do my own thing. :D: It's my guess they'll love the parks, but if they don't, so what? They have as much right not to like it as I do to like it.

Why would you want to take kids to Disney World? :D:

Those freaks on board X are the ones standing in the middle of a pathway while their kids are in the middle of a meltdown because they had them up at the crack of dawn. We see that and laugh as we say "it's the happiest place on earth".

Seriously, ignore the idiots over there, have fun with or without kids. There are some great people over there but the also have their share of "interesting" people too. That have no problem sharing their 2 cents on everything, right or wrong.

The wife an I have been to Disney World and Disneyland, without our son, and have never experienced this. If someone were to say something to us I would straighten them out right away and I wouldn't be too courteous.

Oh yeah, now that we're empty nesters as the youngest is now a Husker, we'll take a trip to DLR and beyond on our own.

Thanks for the support, everyone! It's nice to remind myself that I'm not the only one who understands the magic of the Mouse without the mini-me's. (Too much alliteration?)

Sooooooooo true (although I stick to my assessment that mostly this particular board is reasonable people with a sense of humor). I'm not a mother, and I try very, very hard not to judge what I see other parents doing out in public. I know there's a lot more going on behind any meltdown, request for a toy, refusal to cooperate, etc. than I can tell just passing by.

But dude. When it's 2pm in the Magic Kingdom on a 95 degree day, and your stroller-less 5-yo is screaming in the middle of a pathway....TAKE THEM BACK TO THE HOTEL FOR A FRIGGEN NAP! When it's 10pm at the California Grill and your 7-yo is throwing a hissy fit about wanting chicken fingers...GET THEM COUNTER SERVICE AND GET THEM TO BED!

And no, parent of the happy, bouncy kid waiting patiently in line at Pooh at 11pm during EMH at the Magic Kingdom, I'm not judging you. I'm guessing you all took a nap at 3 and you're sleeping in tomorrow morning. No, parent of the kid crying at 10am because you won't buy her a $12 princess balloon because you already bought her a $20 hat (that she can actually take home!), I'm not judging you, either. Kudos to you for teaching your daughter that she can have a few treats, but your wallet and the world do not revolve around her every whim. No, parent of the kid crying at noon because you won't let them ride Dumbo for the 10th time this trip, you, too, are free from my judgment. If you can only tolerate waiting in an outdoor line when it's 10 min long first thing in the morning, I'm right there with you.

Just please, please, PLEASE, for the sake of my vacation, yours, and your children's, keep them cool, comfortable, and well-rested.

We don't have children at all, but that hasn't kept us from going around once year. Two times some years! :D: We definitely get "But you don't have kids" or "You're going there again?" from time to time when Disney comes up, but we just smile and say "Yes, isn't it great?" When asked where we're going I usually just say "Florida" because it is sometimes easier.

If they don't get it, it's their loss! Oh, yes, and for the record, we have reservations to go yet again.
