Except that HAL was, according to both film and novel, built at the IBM plant in Champain/Urbana Illinois.

Spoiler warning if you haven't seen or read 2010.

All this ignores the sequel's contention that HAL was an innocent victim of contradictory programming, having been giving information and tasks which were to be kept secret from the crew. And in the end, HAL sacrificed himself to save the Russian and American crew members who went to investigate what happened to Discovery. HAL good, evil government operatives bad. :cool:
