She certainly seemed a free spirit. Often Elizabeth took an opposite view then her husband which was almost unheard of as First Lady in that era, maybe still not P C. I commend you former First Lady Mrs. Ford. You helped pave many new paths. R I P

You look at her at the funeral of her husband, and you can see she wanted to run off somewhere and bawl her eyes out. But she kept it together very well. I think Ford was actually a pretty decent president--but he only had two years in office after taking over after Nixon stepped down. And the press was always making fun of his clumsiness. Did you know Gerald Ford was once a model?

Re: Betty Ford Won't Be Down For Breakfast
A whole lot has been made of her "addictions" and the resulting Betty Ford Center, but I have heard so little about her battle with Breast Cancer while Ford was in office. She was the first to publicly discuss the problem and detail what was done to save her life. As a result, many more women had screenings and literally thousands lived full lives because of it.
She was a walking testament to the success of that 1970's (imagine that) procedure. She died at age 93, I think they said. Wow, that's impressive.

Hopefully Betty Ford will not be overlooked by historians. I think she rates up there with Eleanor Roosevelt as having an impact on society.
