Ah, yes, 1985. I was in college at the time... and I was one of the many who drank the New Coke, wondered why in the heck they had messed with the taste of the #1 soft drink in the world, and let them know about it -- until they wised up and (re-)released "Coca-Cola Classic."

You're welcome.

I liked Coke before the new Coke. Then switched to Pepsi. When they went back to Classic Coke it just didn't taste right. For some reason though I prefer fountain Coke over fountain Pepsi, but if it's in a can I prefer the Pepsi. Fountain Pepsi is too sweet. Also like RC Cola.

I believe they always use cane for the 7-up, at least in the TO area.
Ahhh that would explain why the pop up here always tasted better then when I am in the states. I could never figure it out and just assumed it was the water.

Makes sense now.

So would they be upset if I walked in with my Pepsi in hand?

Of course the Mountain Dew, dr. Pepper, and Mr Pib are so much better south of the border. And the Mello Yello....

Not a Dr. Pepper fan but totally understand preferring cane sugar to corn syrup (although I'd probably be fine with beet sugar too, or at least I am when cooking). For a long time you could still get the sugar-sweetened A&W at one of the drive-ins, and I'd drive past two of them to get there.
Once it's been refined, there's no difference between cane sugar and beet sugar. The cane industry wants you to believe otherwise, of course.

There's a theory floating around the that the whole "new Coke" thing was just a way for Coke to switch from sugar-sweetened to corn-syrup-sweetened without the fans rioting. Wasn't a coke drinker (carbonated beverages are a semi-rare treat in my reality), so I can't remember if that times out right or not.

Amphigorey,

That's what I figured. Supposedly refined sugar is one of the purest chemicals you can get, in which case the different sources shouldn't have a lot of impact. But I'm not a chemist, and for all I know the guys who make that claim may be defining "pure" in a Dove soap kinda way...

Any idea why cane sugar is considered kosher, and beet sugar is not ?

I'm pretty sure beet sugar is kosher. Powdered sugar, or some powdered sugar, is not kosher (or not kosher for Passover?), because it can have corn starch in it.

Been there, ate that, regretted it for weeks thereafter. I really don't think the Varsity is as appropriate for a bucket list as a bucket would be for the Varsity.

Ugh! I'd rather eat at Aramark!
