Tokyo Disneyland hit by 'liquefaction' after quake

Post by TiggerHappy » Fri Mar 11, 2011 3:37 am

I hope everyone's allright. :(

-----------------------------------------------------

TOKYO - THE car park at Tokyo Disneyland was drenched with water-logged segments from the ground following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that rocked Japan's Pacific coast on Friday, police said.

It was earlier reported that a tsunami might have caused the inundation but police said the phenomenon was due to liquefaction of soil caused by the intense shaking of the tremor.

There were 69,000 people at the Disneyland and the adjacent Tokyo Disney Sea, built on a landfill in Tokyo Bay, when the quake occurred, a spokesman at the local Urawa police station said.

There were no injuries or property damage reported at the theme parks, he told AFP.

'The visitors have been evacuated to safe places but there are many puddles due to liquefaction around the theme parks,' he said.

Good to know things aren't too bad over there:

"As many of you know, an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck near the coast of Japan on Friday and Tokyo Disney Resort was one of the many areas affected. Fortunately our team on the ground has reported only minor injuries and minimal property damage at Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. The safety of our guests and cast members is always our first concern so both parks will remain closed on Saturday to allow for a thorough inspection of our attractions and facilities. Cast members at the Tokyo Disney Resort are also providing humanitarian aid in the form of blankets, food and water for guests who are still at the resort due to the transportation challenges associated with the earthquake."

Tokyo Disney Resort has announced that it will be suspending operations indefinately. The Oriental Land Company, Ltd., the third-party company which operates the Resort under licence, has indicated that it will take a decision regarding the resumption of operations around 21 March approximately.

The safety of Guests and Cast Members is the first priority of both the Oriental Land Company, Ltd. and of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. No major damage was reported at the Resort. The resumption of operations will be determined based on the recovery of transportation and other infastructure in the Kanto (Greater Tokyo) region.

More information in a Japan Times article is available here, or from the OLC Group here (in Japanese).

The one that really gets me, as someone who operates all sorts of vehicles, is the fact that four trains disappeared, and three of them are still just... missing.

Thoughts and prayers with the people of Japan.

I do hope everything is okay over there. I have been following what has occurred @ Disney. I feel awful for what has happened over there. Not just for the park, but for the whole nation.

RIP Bud Hurlbut.

You will be missed.

That is a crazy video. You know that what he recorded will be analyzed by people who make disaster movies and used in future shows.

That was definitely freaky to watch.

I shouldn't have watched that, and excerpts from "Begotten" on the same day. I had a dream my flesh was suffering liquefaction... oddly it didn't hurt, but it sure was messy...
