Frank Buckles will not be down for breakfast

Post by Big Wallaby » Tue Mar 15, 2011 3:44 pm

Frank Buckles was the last surviving soldier to fight in World War I.

From Dailyworld.com

So upon further reading, the current news story is that he is lying in state. A high honor, one deserved.

I read many were requesting Mr. Buckles be given this high honor he so deserved. The correct decision was made by Washington. DisneyLand Flag Retreat did pay tribute to this WW I Soldier. Thank You Mr. Buckles for service well done sir.
Rest in Peace. :usflag:

President Obama has ordered all flags to half-staff today in his memory.

I knew something was up walking into work today when I saw the flag at the entrance to DAK at half-staff but figured it was due to the earthquake/tsunami in Japan. I found out the real reason during the morning meeting when the manager asked if we knew why the flags were at half staff. We made a few guesses, all wrong, and he told us why.

A fitting tribute in my opinion, as is the lying in state.

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

As a mark of respect for the memory of Army Corporal Frank W. Buckles, the last surviving American veteran of World War I, and in remembrance of the generation of American veterans of World War I, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that, on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half‑staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day. I further direct that the flag shall be flown at half‑staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

Sadly, it appears he was denied both the honors of lying in state and lying in honor.

At least he was buried at Arlington with full military honors.

He did lie in honor at Arlington.

As the last veteran of that war, lying in state was a proper honor, as by doing so we honor all veterans of that war, and all veterans period.
