Wish I had thought of that! He obviously doesn't care if he gets any return on his investment.

He has a pretty good income source, as worldwide promoter of the U2, rolling stones, madonna and other big shows. As long as people buy concert tickets, he's doing fine!

I have a personal grudge against it. Not because of the show itself, but the fact that, because it got canceled, it caused the local musical theater group (well, one of them, the one I had season tickets for) to go belly up mid-season.

Afraid I'm not quite at the point where I can laugh and make jokes about it. I really liked that group. They put on some great shows, and hosted some great "road" companies.

I'm right there with you on this one. I remember when word got to us (I worked with the facility that they usually performed at) about the closure of the company. It was right before Thanksgiving, they called everyone together and told them they were all out of a job.
It wasn't so much the Tarzan production that caused the problem, as much as the other theatre group that the company had partnered with to produce it. That group took the money meant for the production and used for their own expenses.

Those kind of financial disasters are teh reason that most professional (and many non profit) theatres are now setting up each production as a separate corporate entity. It provides some protection for the presenter/producer if "Tarzan Touring LLC" should go belly up. and all the show staff are employed by that LLC, and not "The State Performing Arts Centre", thereby limiting exposure for the "centre". The audience doesnt see anything different as a result of it, but the bean counters keep their gold in separate piles, and when one pile is empty, the others are safe.
The unions have treated each production as a separate company for many years as far as the bonds for payroll are concerned. In order to get an equity or IA contract from the New York offices, the production must post a payroll bond of a week or two salary for the members of the company, cast and crew. It came about due to the number of shows that went belly up without notice over the years. I have friends who were with the Durante company playing San francisco in the early 90s when the earthquake hit. they thought they were covered for a couple weeks pay, then they discovered that the unions had caved on the companys request to release the bonds as working capital was needed... never again. They all got stiffed. Once bitten twice shy.
