I'm becoming one of "them."

Post by BirdMom » Sat Jan 01, 2011 3:07 am

I haven't worked for DLR since this time two years ago. And frankly, I only went back because A) my student loans were coming due and I needed a job fast, and B) I missed free admission. So after 14 years altogether of working there, and missing some things, it's finally happened. I got an AP for Xmas.

So let me promise y'all right now that I will never, EVER do anything to any current or future CMs that would ever make them regard me as a passhole. Well, maybe some of my former managers who I hate with a passion, but not the hourlies

It'll just be nice to go in on a quiet afternoon when I feel like it, sketchbook in hand, or maybe just shop and take a ride or two. And catch up with my buds still there... See y'all later.

"A little swordplay, now and then, keeps my mind off sheep!"

"You're messing with my Zen thing, man."

"Dreams are as portals,
flat visions of misty places,
fragments bound below my surface,
but I can write dreams,
they flow from me,
inscribed but now unbound,
I touch them,
and they are real,
and they are real."

Once a Cast Member, if you really were in spirit, can you ever mentally not be? Can you ever get yourself to stop caring about the guest experience?

I would wager that if you can, you may never have been a Cast Member to begin with.

Sadly, I see too many employees around that do not regard what they do that way... and why would you, when it seems your freedom to interact with the guests and make magic is cut down at every turn? I have seen it now, looking back even, in every area where I have ever worked.

Sorry, coming down off my rant. I'm stopping. Stopping now.

Going to exit, stage left. Wait, that's right. Sorry.

OMG, that shirt is hysterical!

Well, at other times when I've been between stints of employment at the park, I would still have guests walking up to me, in my plain clothes, and asking me questions. I don't know if it's because I didn't look confused, or just seemed to be fine with standing/sitting around and watching the world go by there. For whatever reason, I had people asking me directions in London and Paris too, so maybe I just look like I know what I'm doing? I guess I must have one of those faces...

I've decided it's in the eye contact. I now make eye contact with other guests for no particular reason, just that I'm used to it.

Eye contact may certainly be a key. I get approached all the time, though, and I've never been a CM and I don't make eye contact. I think a huge factor is just looking like you know where you are and what you're doing. That certainly will make anyone stick out among the SG's.

Maybe it's just that you're so huge you stick out?

(For those who haven't met him, Wombat's about 5-foot 18.)

I'm actually only 4'2", but my air of authority makes me look taller.

We've got a new guy in VM who is 7'2" and larger around than me! I like hanging around him because he makes me look smaller. :) I don't often meet people like that.

Next time you get down here, I am putting you and Shorty82 back to back. I can't remember which of you will be taller. Yes, we could settle it here with numbers, but where is the fun in that?
