Wi Fi in the parks

Post by chartle » Tue Nov 16, 2010 8:49 am

This question has come up at least 5 times this week on board X.

A SG will get an itouch and then ask what are the good wait times apps for the park assuming that free wi fi is or should be everywhere.

Most people including myself will tell then that there is no wifi in the parks and very little at the resorts.

The tread sometimes takes two paths
  • why doesn't big old greedy Disney provide it for free like the Motel 6 or
  • I heard that if you stand in a certain spot near x you can get a free wifi signal.
My question is about the second, people swear that they have seen and connected to wifi at various places but no one can confirm it.

The last open hotspot reported was at BB. Initially I'm thinking people are using MiFi's or loading the software to make their phone a hotspot and thats what people are connecting to and hence the reason no one else finds these spots.

Well the poster responded that when they connected with their itouch they got the Disney splash screen/disclaimer/please except screen.

So does anyone know whats going on? Also why would Disney even think about creating a guest hotpot at a water park?

thanks

PS I'm asking for pure curiosity any info will stay here.

I've never seen any official WiFi at Disney for public use.

I have thought of setting up my laptop using my aircard as an open WiFi and capturing packets...

Well the convention and I think the deluxe resorts have wifi in their lobbies but it is still part of the pay per day or hour system that is in every room.

There is a TWDC signal almost everywhere, but you can't even try to connect to it without the proper certificate. In the office areas, there is an unencrypted signal that you can grab but it dumps you to a hub login screen before you can do anything on it.

That's what's gone through my mind whenever I have encountered an open Migo or other unsecured signal! But then again, maybe the people are just naive and haven't locked down their hor spots!

On the subject of 3G/ wifi hot spots.... Does anyone know if they are available on a pay as you go basis? Since I'm only in the US for a couple weeks a year, a monthly data plan for a Migo makes no sense. But if I could do pay as you go, my gigs would be able to be used on subsequent trips!
Paying the roaming rates for data makes no sense financially, it's 1$ per Meg or more!

Check out the Virgin Mobile Pay as you Go at Walmart.com. Not sure if the minutes expire or not.

Actually, the WiFi at resorts is a completely separate system from the wired access in guest rooms. If a guest uses both, he pays twice!

And yeah, Disney doesn't offer free WiFi anywhere. Some areas of AK might be close enough to the Hwy 192 Motel 6, but even that will require a valid name/room number for access.

Was going to suggest the same thing. $40 a month/unlimited bandwidth. $20 for 1 Gig.

Hell, in DCA there are some areas that don't even have wifi for company use! Makes those portable POS terminals a total loss when they go offline. Can't charge cards. :(
But yeah, I'm pretty sure there's no wifi that guests can use in the park.

RIP Bud Hurlbut.

You will be missed.

I think I'd rather pay the $25 to get my Droid turned into it's own WiFi hotspot for a month. OR better yet... leave the computer home... the Droid gets Internets via cellular anyhow. I'm on vacation here!
