Alcohol + Pregnancy = OK?!

Post by glendalais » Wed Oct 06, 2010 8:54 pm

Why do I not see this ending well?

The Guardian (United Kingdom): Light drinking during pregnancy 'does children no harm'

Anyone want to guess before an SG moms-to-be extrapolate this to mean she can binge while pregnant as long as she doesn't do it repeatedly??

I'm just thinking out loud here but my generation was during the time when mothers to be, drank alcohol, coffee and smoked cigarettes throughout pregnancy. Now I'm not saying that we turned out perfectly but back then 1 in every 168th child didn't end up autistic. I'm just saying...do the math. Maybe what they did back then wasn't good, but maybe we should look into today's practices and see if there is a connection with some life style trend that is in place now.

Modern Darwinism -- kill off the weak while still in the womb. Fewer sickly kids that way.

Yep,my Mom Smoked and Drank all through Pregnancy-Thought labor pains were from a Holiday Party  I came a few weeks early, under 5lbs.....

I'm Perfectly *Normal* :p:

Whatever is causing Autism now does seem to have correlated with changes in Lifestyle/environment since the 1960's....however,it looks like there are possibly multiple causative factors, sort of like Cancer. No person with Autism seems to be exactly like another.

I do suspect that another factor is greater rate of diagnosis as doctors become more and more familiar with Autism. Remember, the first known cases classified as Autism were only diagnosed in 1943, and while Aspergers was first diagnosed in 1938, it wasn't classified on the Autistic Disorder spectrum until 1981.

I read a (non-technical) article in the paper about two weeks ago or so that said some researchers think they have found a genetic cause for autism.

Doctors sure did take a long time to catch up-I had an "MD" tell me that kid was autistic because kid needed "re-mothering" This was approximately 1998-the "theory" about bad parents causing Autism had been discredited in 1968

I also look at what is in the food. MSG, High Fructose Corn Syrup, dyes, etc... And in America, it is VERY difficult to escape food choices that have those in them.

I forget the exact numbers, but when you look at cancer rates, they have gone from 1:300+ to 1:2 projected for my generation. I will try to find the article I read that in.

A pilot friend brought back at Twix from his layover in Paris. No HFCS or the other stuff I am bemoaning, and it tasted wonderful. Where American Twix takes about three packages to feel satisfying (and that only because I told myself it was), just a couple bites of the non-American Twix was more than enough... and that was with it tasting better.

I am not normally a conspiracy theorist. Those trains that some are touting as Obama's death trains (just quoting the idiots on YouTube who may share many of my political leanings but are morons because of that)... c'mon, they're car haulers. I've seen them and been inside. There's no guillotine or shackles. I don't think the FEMA camps are modern day death camps. And I could list more. I know one of the guys who was a camera man on the sound stage for the moon landing*. I think most conspiracy theories are completely bunk, and I love them for their entertainment value, just watching people get up in arms about them... but when it comes to food, I am the greatest of the conspiracy theorists. I do believe that is how I got to well over 300 pounds until not so long ago, and it's by eating smart and avoiding the junk they put out that I've lost so much and maintained that loss, and will lose more (though not if I often join friends from out of town at Boma!) soon. I do think that there is someone in the food industry, lots of someones, who is/are willing to sacrifice your health and mine for more money. Coca Cola is more than one third sugar, which is just plain bad for your body. Oreo has over 40 different mixtures, so that you never are eating the same thing. Even "Lite/Light" foods like low-calorie salad dressings have MSG. The whole thing with trans fats? That whole horse and pony show was only because they got caught (and I'd rather do trans fats than MSG and HFCS which are STILL in our diets).

Anyway, time to stop my rant. Sometimes it's a pain when your mindset is, "Why say it in 10 words, when 3,000 would suffice?"

Oh, and my use of certain political conspiracy theories was not an invitation for debate. I really don't like discussing politics, as there is no leadership on either side of the aisle. Bring me a Truman or a Lincoln and I will discuss politics then. On some other board.

*Yes, I AM kidding. And so was he. Everyone knows that the camera crew was waiting for them on the moon. And I LOVE the Mythbusters episode about it.

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?
