Assuming you don't want to drop over $100 on a bottle, stick to a single malt scotch of at least 12 years old with a name you can't pronounce. This should get you on their good side. A Macallan 12 or Glenmorangie 15 should earn respect. Ask the shopkeep for pricing lest you look like an ass when he pulls down a dusty $300 bottle and you don't like your host that much. I flat out tell them "something old and really good in the $50 range, high quality at a value price." After once buying a $200 bottle of vinegar (labeled champagne) I never spent over $50 on booze again. I gave one to my boss, I'm lucky I didn't get fired.CujoSR wrote:Speaking of Scotch can anybody suggest any good whiskeys i could bring with me to a group of whiskey connoisseurs?
I've learned not to try to BS people if you're not a connossu, conoss, well however you spell that. If I'm a noob, I'll say something like "I know very little about x, it was recommended by a (friend, article, clerk) and I figured I'd give it a try with you guys. Let me know what you think." That usually gives them an opening to flex their knowledge and enlighten you a little. It strokes their ego and let's you get in with them, and you actually learn a few things for next time.
If you've got a whiskey bar near you, see if they do whiskey flights and try one. Note your likes, dislikes, and preferences for each, and that's your conversation with them. If you taste one you really like, make a note of the name and age and buy that bottle. At least you'll like it when you have to drink it.
What I love about conno... those guys is that they want to try everything, so anything you bring is an experience for them. That's why they always ask "what are you drinking / smoking / eating? What do you think about it?" If they don't like what you brought, you just crossed it off their list and they are thankful. If they love it, you're their new best friend. If they act like you're a know nothing punk and turn snob, you avoid that jackoff, he's bad news for everyone. If it's a gift for a host, they should accept it gracefully even if it's a bottle of Dewar's.

Don't be fooled by appearances. In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stuntmen.
