We've already decided to buy there...if we ever win the lottery. Probably spend half of the weekends there a year...and Christmas break...and Thanksgiving break...and Spring Break...and half of Summer vacation.

That is until the kids are out of school. Who knows then...maybe winter there, summer somewhere in the mountains of North Carolinia?

I am disappointed that these are intended as vacation homes and not residences. I was giving serious though to buying one after I hit the Lottery so I could cut down on my commuting time.

What makes you say that? From the article it sounds liek they are/could be full time residences.

If they're vacation homes, does that prevent the owner from having a vote in the local elections?

Might depend on 'Florida' residency laws. I've run into a lot of folks who 'own' property here,but reside some where else most of the time. Depends on the criteria. (remember,your milage may vary)
Years ago,a ex city councilman came in to rent something from us. I asked for his drivers lincense,he gives me an out of state license. He got all pissy when he told me he lived out of state but had a local voters card. Don't know how he pulled that off,but he ponied up with a deposit.
